AstraZeneca’s FluMist vaccine was granted FDA approval last week for at-home administration, making it the first “take-out” flu vaccine that doesn’t need to be administered by a healthcare provider. The Defender reports: According to MedPageToday, the FDA approved FluMist for self- or caregiver-administration, for people ages 2-49, with a doctor’s prescription. A usability study determined people ages 18 and over could either self-administer the vaccine or administer it to eligible people using the instructions provided. The vaccine, which is sprayed into the nose, targets influenza virus subtypes A and B, MedPageToday said.

Instead of using resources to create a digital dollar, the central bank said it will instead look at evolving the “payment” processes in Canada.

> Earth could experience a geomagnetic storm on Wednesday (Sept. 25) after the sun lashed out with a huge spout of plasma. The probability of our planet experiencing effects from the geomagnetic storm may be higher due to the fact that this particular solar outburst occurred around the same time as Earth’s autumnal equinox. The coronal mass ejection (CME) was unleashed on Sunday (Sept. 22) at 5:39 p.m. EDT (2139 UTC) when a sunspot designated AR3835 erupted unexpectedly with an M-class solar flare. Solar scientists weren’t expecting this eruption because AR3835 had seemed too stable to explode, according to SpaceWeather.com. Currently rocketing toward Earth at over 650,000 miles per hour (1,046,073 kilometers per hour), this tendril of solar plasma will only strike a glancing blow on Earth’s protective magnetic bubble, the magnetosphere, with the majority missing Earth, according to NASA modeling. This normally wouldn’t trigger a geomagnetic storm, but that might be different on Wednesday because of the timing of this CME.
> For astronomers, finding a new black hole orbiting an aged red dwarf star is an exciting find in itself, but when that black hole seems to be a “missing link” stellar-mass black hole, you can crank the excitement up to 11! That is exactly what seems to be lurking in binary system G3425, estimated to be around 5,800 light-years away. The visible component of G3425 is a red giant star, the kind of stellar body you get when a star exhausts its supply of hydrogen fuel and can no longer conduct nuclear fusion in its core. This causes its outer layers (where fusion continues) to “puff out” to as much as 100 times the star’s original width. Our own star, the sun, is currently in its middle age. This means that in around 5 billion years, it will enter its red giant phase and swell up to around the orbit of Mars, swallowing the inner planets, including Earth. Even then, what the red giant sun almost certainly won’t have is a stellar-mass black hole as a companion. The team’s research is published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
> SpaceX has pulled some pieces of its Starship megarocket from the sea. On Sunday evening (Sept. 22), SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk posted on X a photo of dripping and damaged rocket hardware being lifted out of the ocean. The mangled metal is part of the first-stage booster that flew on the most recent Starship test flight, Musk said. “Like the ruins of a futuristic, long-dead civilization,” he wrote in another post a few hours later. SpaceX is developing Starship to get people and payloads to the moon, Mars and beyond. The vehicle consists of two stainless-steel elements — a huge first-stage booster called Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall (50 meters) upper-stage spacecraft called Starship, or just Ship. Both of these stages are designed to be fully and rapidly reusable, and both are powered by SpaceX’s powerful new Raptor engines — 33 for Super Heavy and six for Ship. Starship, which stands 400 feet tall (122 meters) tall when fully stacked, has flown four test flights to date, all of them from SpaceX’s Starbase site in South Texas.
