The new coronavirus pneumonia is raging all over the world, and the number of diagnosed cases is increasing every day. Everyone uses all kinds of magic weapons to grab masks, alcohol hand rub, and bleach, just to completely eliminate the virus; fresh air. Whether you have switched to Work From Home, or you choose to stay at home without leaving home, you can apply anti-epidemic methods to help clean the home air. Heard that planting small potted plants indoors will help to purify the air? And see the experts explain whether it is true or false, let everyone think for themselves. But planting green plants indoors will certainly help to relax the tense mood of anti-epidemic and even relieve the pressure accumulated over the past few months!

How do indoor plants purify the air?

As early as 1989, NASA had research that believed that indoor plants were effective natural air purifiers. Every 10 square feet of space, there should be a suitable indoor plant. Indoor spaces with plants can reduce more than 60% of harmful substances in the air compared to those without plants; increase indoor humidity levels and reduce environmental drying; generate negative ions to help remove indoor dust, mold, bacteria and allergens. Some of these plants can be filtered to specific volatile organic compounds and pollutants, such as benzene, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide, trichloroethylene and xylene (common in detergents, pesticides, furniture, etc.). However, the results of NASA ’s research that year were based on plants in a vacuum box of less than one cubic meter. If the situation is mapped to the actual indoor environment and conditions, is the effect consistent?

Last year, a study in "Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology" put forward a new statement: 5 indoor plants need to be planted every 10.7 feet to produce air purification, that is, about 100 feet Planting about 50 small potted plants can change the air quality. This is based on the conclusion that the environmental conditions with low air flow and the minimum standards for removing specified air substances (pollen, smog, dust). If the indoor air flows frequently, or if the indoor and outdoor air exchanges are frequent, the plant's air purification speed will become extremely slow, which greatly reduces the purification efficiency.

Top 5 NASA recommended indoor plants?

Although the air purification effect brought by the indoor planting of potted plants is minimal, planting flowers or green plants at home or office can undoubtedly help relax and heal the soul! Here are 5 kinds of indoor plants recommended by NASA and easy to get started, so that everyone can make good use of time and space to green the home or office and retreat from the depressed mood!

    1. ALOE VERA

place of origin: Africa, the Mediterranean coast.
Distributed:        Private homes rarely plant a pot for viewing and medicinal purposes.
Aloe vera has been serving people in various ancient civilizations since ancient times. Today, aloe vera is not only for external use, but also a star in indoor potted plants.

Studies have shown that the roots of aloe help to remove chemicals such as xylene, benzene, and formaldehyde in the air. In places where volatile organic compounds are too high, brown spots will appear on the leaves of aloe, which can be used as an indicator plant for detecting air.

Aloe vera is native to dry tropical areas, so it has a special "sedum acid metabolism" ( CAM ) to keep their stomata closed during the day to avoid losing too much water. In the evening, the stomata on their leaves will open and expel oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Bill Wolverton , a former NASA scientist, suggested that one aloe should be placed in every bedroom.

When taking care of aloe vera, you must choose a well-lit area, preferably 6 hours a day , and use loose, well-drained sandy soil for planting. As long as you grasp less watering, keep warm, and have enough light, aloe can grow beautifully and well!

Suitable location: bright room in bedroom, window sill, etc.

Excellent info. I have quite a few of these plants in a long planter out in the annex. Maybe it's time to move them to the front room.
