First artificial eggs, which come from China, could be found in markets and now plastic rice is said to be spreading to several Asian nations. The news of the fake rice started showing on social media platforms, such as Facebook and WhatsApp.
It is believed that now the rice “reached” Singapore. The plastic rice which is sold on the Chinese markets probably has found its way in some Asian countries, including Indonesia, Vietnam and India. Consumers claim that this kind of rice can also be found in many well known brands. Many consumers have reported that plastic rice causes gastritis and various stomach related diseases after consumption. People who encountered the rice said that it cannot be detected because it comes mixed with the normal, regular rice packs.
The consumption of such fake rice, coated with poisonous resin, can do some serious damage on the digestive system, health experts warn. According to the International Business Times, the plastic rice is made of mixture consisting sweet potatoes, synthetic resin and regular potatoes. The food hoax has been circulating on Taiyuan, Shaanxi’s markets for some a long time.
The bad news is that it is almost identical to natural rice. The Agro-based Industry Ministry and Malaysian Agriculture firmly deny receiving any kind of reports about the resin-laced rice. However, if the fake rice have found its way in Malaysia, it is most likely to be bought in small shops rather than the previously mentioned large supermarkets, they say.
The question is “how can we avoid purchasing and therefore consuming plastic rice”? The unhealthy plastic grains, which are made by a mixture made of sweet potatoes, regular potatoes and Chinese polymer, is very similar to the natural grains of rice and it can hardly be noticed by mere look. However, once it is cooked, the fake rice remains in hard form. If you use it to make soup, a noticeable plastic sheath will form. If you set the plastic sheath on fire it will burn as it was plain plastic.
