DAVID CAMERON has announced plans to block encrypted messaging services in wake of the attacks in France

The Prime Minister's plans for new surveillance laws were revealed today and could mean the end of several popular messaging services.
Mr Cameron has pledged to stop all methods of communication that can't be read by any of the UK's security services, leaviing the likes of of WhatsApp and Snapchat, which encrypt data, facing a total ban after the next election.
The Prime Minister explained: “In our country, do we want to allow a means of communication between people which we cannot read?
"My answer to that question is no we must not".

After Charlie Hebdo attacks, E.U. officials call for more online surveillance

A coalition of 12 European Union nations is using the terrorist attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which left 12 people dead, to call for drastically increased Internet surveillance.
“We are concerned at the increasingly frequent use of the Internet to fuel hatred and violence,” the countries said in a statement, “and signal our determination to ensure that the Internet is not abused to this end.”
The proclamation, issued Sunday, bears the signatures of foreign ministers from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Sweden, and the U.K..
To the people who believe—based on studies that show—that surveillance is intrinsically a form of censorship, the statement is a chilling one. It's especially disturbing given the political context for the Charlie Hebdo attack, which was reportedly ordered by an Al Qaeda affiliate. The terrorist attack is widely believed to be an attempt by the group to stifle caricatures of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Paris attacks aftermath: Europe on high alert amid terror threats

Many European countries are on high alert, boosting security measures in the wake of last week’s deadly terror attacks in Paris. Denmark, Norway and Germany have already detected various threats.

German federal investigators are currently examining a possible threat of copycat attacks by local sympathizers to the last week’s attack in Paris that left 12 people dead, Die Welt newspaper reported Wednesday. Investigators registered suspicious Internet activity, such as open calls for terror attacks.
According to a 25-page secret document, a copy of which was obtained by the newspaper, “The attack could also work as a spark for people living or staying in Germany who are predisposed to such acts.” However, German security agents have no “concrete intelligence or evidence” that any attack is in preparation.

“The sectarian tensions in the Middle East are mirrored in our cities in Europe,” Magnus Ranstorp, a terrorism specialist at the Swedish National Defense College, told AP. “There is more strident activism in Muslim communities.”
The fears of an emerging threat were echoed by Adam Schiff, a member of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, who told AP: “It's tough, though, particularly when we don't have great intelligence in places like Syria, to identify what's happened to Americans who have gone overseas to fight.”
“Very opaque and difficult to track. That problem is magnified a hundred times in Europe, where people can travel freely with a passport,” he added.

European anti-terror plan wants 42 pieces of data from air travelers


Passengers flying to and from Europe will now be forced to submit a long list of personal details, which can be stored for up to five years. The counter-terrorism plan would record data such as meal preferences and how many flights someone has missed.

The directive has been introduced by the European Commission and requires air travelers to fill in 42 separate pieces of information. Some of the fields would not cause too many eyebrows to be raised, such as nationality or frequent flyer information. Others, such as meal preference or the number of one-way tickets bought are slightly more puzzling, the Guardian reports.

The information would be stored for five years and would be given to security personnel upon demand. The European Commission says the move is necessary in order to help combat terrorism and has been championed by interior ministers across the EU. The ministers came to a consensus while they were gathered in Paris, for the ‘Je suis Charlie’ March that introducing the measure was imperative to tackle terrorism concerns.
