Several years ago I borrowed some world/global music CDs from the public library. One CD impacted me in a profound way – a CD of traditional Sudanese music. I started to have dreams of being cradled from a tree watching my mother & family, not a familiar concept to a Western woman. The music soothed me in inexplicable ways and I listened to it constantly. Before I took the CD back to the library, a co-worker poked his head in my office and said,”you have my CD!” I said, “No, it’s from the library!” He kept repeating that it was his CD – I finally clued in – this was the Sudanese musician on the CD. I had been working with him all along. I purchased both his CDs of Sudanese Thumb Piano music; he became a close friend, and eventually provided crosscultural presentations for my husband’s school district, including a Thumb Piano workshop. I still listen to my Sudanese music, even more so these days.
