Apr 19, 2011 - Usually the sign of some kind of seismic activity... the area North of Los Angeles, (oxnard, CA) watch out for earthquake activity relatively soon on a larger than normal scale.
Todays news story... we see Sardines and Anchovies --- wash ashore north of Los Angeles ... official line... AGAIN .. .low oxygen ... this isn't the FIRST low oxygen story.. what is going on?

Biologists care to comment on this? Anyone?!

Hundreds of dead fish found in Ventura Harbor

VENTURA HARBOR (KABC) -- Hundreds of fish have been found dead in Ventura Harbor. This is the second large fish kill in Southern California this year. This time, hundreds of dead fish are floating in Ventura Harbor.

The phone calls started coming into the Ventura Harbor Patrol around 6 a.m. Monday. Boaters were already noticing a large number of dead fish floating in the water. One officer said that in the past year, there have been three or four times that this has happened, and in recent days, he was worried that this was going to happen again.

Once again, something's fishy along our Southern California coastline: Another fish die-off, this one in the Ventura Harbor.

"It looks like the majority of them are anchovies and sardines and I saw a few perch though also," said Pat Hummer, senior patrol officer at the harbor. "We're talking thousands, there's a lot of fish."

Hummer is the senior patrol officer for Ventura Harbor. He says the fish likely died from lack of oxygen. And he says he thought that for the past week, this might happen.

"There was just a lot of baitfish in this harbor the last few days and when they all come in, they all suck up all that oxygen out of the water and that's when they start struggling," said Hummer.

Sea lions, seagulls, and pelicans have been swooping in to eat the fish. The rest are being cleaned up by the Ventura Harbor Patrol.

"We got the majority," said Hummer. "We probably got 90-something percent of the dead fish out of the harbor. And I think Mother Nature, the birds, the sea lions will take care of hopefully the rest of them."

This fish kill is on a much smaller scale compared to what was seen in Redondo Beach early last month when 2.5 million sardines were killed weighing roughly 175 tons.

"Well we've taken and disposed of about 15 to 20 fifty-gallon barrels of dead fish," said Hummer.

Because this is a relatively small number of anchovies and sardines, the Game and Fish Commission gave the Harbor Patrol the OK to go and dump the fish out at sea and let nature take its course, but there's still a lot of baitfish in the harbor and some of the officers were saying they are a little concerned that this might happen again Tuesday.

I live in San Pedro, CA and bought earthquake insurance after the Japanese quake and Redondo Beach fish kill. Now another west coast fish kill. I guess we just wait and see if the fish kill means anything. I hear a spike in missing dog and cat want ads is another indicator. Interesting.

Hi Adam and welcome to Mists. Jim Berkland is the one who discovered that animals went missing prior to a quake so his data has been fairly reliable over the years. He was the one who predicted the San Francisco quake in 89 but missed it this last planetary alignment and supermoon time. I honestly suspect so many people were praying over this that it didn't happen. But that is just my personal opinion. I do know from scientific studies that when there is an observor.. observation itself can alter the outcome of an experiment.

Troy has been doing an excellent job of monitoring quakes in California along with other areas and if you check the quake map he has up you can see how there are numerous quakes along the San Andras Fault line. There have been several hundred small quakes in the past week or so. Because the Pacific tectonic plate shifted with Japan we suspect another shift on the other side along the Western US coastling to happen as well. Time will only tell.

Good on getting insurance. You may want to keep extra water and food stored and have a bug out kit ready to go should you be somewhere you need to evacuate.
