    Final attempt to record building of an underground shelter using a 20 ft. shipping container. For those wondering why I didn't simply pile dirt over it without pouring a concrete cap first..... These containers are mostly sheet metal. Heavy duty as it is, the roof and sides will push inwards from the weight. Eventually the metal will rust through and you'll be buried alive. My way will insure it is still there a few hundred years from now. Problem is, you'd better keep an eye on your sump pump. If it goes bad or loses power, you'll go in one day and find it the whole thing flooded. A surface alarm letting you know the water level is above where it should be isn't a bad idea. Putting the sump pump on a UPS is also a good thing.

    QUOTE: This is a simple home I built from a shipping container when I first arrived on Maui. The song is an award winning song called "Adventures" and I wrote it while I lived there in February of 2007. Http://DonnyPike.Tripod.com

    Indestructible 30 foot monolithic concrete and steel dome being sprayed with 3 inces of 3lb closed cell foam. Next is cosmetics and solar pre heat water to conventional water heater. My belief is that monolithic concrete construction is the possible answer to the disaster in Haiti. DRD Enterprises Inc of Davie will make every effort to contact some agency to volunteer the education and material to construct a monolithic concrete dome, need safe transport for men and equipment from Miami. lunarcon@aol.com www.safedomes.com A monolithic concrete dome is indestructible and can be off the grid Gray water system allowing the use of a compost toilet Inverness, Florida

    HARDENED STRUCTURES perspective as Architects, Engineers, Physicists, Future-Scanning Analyst and Ex-Navy SEALs has provided a unique ability to design client specific shelters to meet almost evey type of 2012 threat event scenario.

    The phenomenon of the December 21, 2012 date is directly related to the Mayan civilization and culture. To better understand this phenomenon and to devise a Protection Program to mitigate the possible effects requires theoretical work in the area of anticipatory analysis and threat identification/mitigation.

    The Mayan civilization itself is an anomaly in the traditional view of history and ancient civilizations. Archaeological records indicate they "suddenly" appeared around 1500 BC (or even earlier according to some findings) in the remote areas of the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, and parts of Belize and Honduras. What sets the Mayans apart from other ancient civilizations is they appear to have arrived with an advanced technology already in place. Where this technology came from exactly is still in debate today.

    What is not in debate is the Mayan's unsurpassed ability to calculate the cosmic cycles of the universe and time in general. The Mayans believed that time repeats itself, and so they believed they should be able to predict the future. This was the fundamental tenet upon which their calendar was based: coming events were foreshadowed in the past. The year 2012 represents the end of a major cycle in this system. The significance of this end-of-cycle year and the the annual astrological event known as the Winter solstice occurring on December 21 in 2012 has made this date the focus of recent media attention.

    Just this year scientists using NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope uncovered a never before seen phenomenon at the center of our galaxy, possibly testifying to a past "large and relatively rapid energy release - the source of which remains a mystery." [View the article on NASA.gov]

    It is important to note that nowhere in any of the Mayan prophecies does it say unconditionally that the world itself is going to end on 12/21/12.

    What the Mayans did say is that the world as we have known it will enter a time of change on this date and that the December 21, 2012 date is the end of the 13-baktun cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar, which in Mayan philosophy equals one World Age. How we respond to that change will define how we experience it and our lives in the next age of existence. It could very well be a start of 1000 years of peace on Earth, or a time of unprecedented catastrophe, or maybe a mixture of both.

    From our perspective as architects, engineers, physicists, future-scanning analyst and construction program managers, we view the 2012 phenomenon not as a question of the accuracy or validity of the Mayan date, but as a problem of shelter design optimization under severe constraints. In this perspective, we look at the anticipated possible effects and the design measures necessary to mitigate those effects.

    Nuclear
    Biological
    Chemical
    Earthquake
    EMP

    This effort requires the generation of new future-scanning functions and theoretical work in the area of anticipatory analysis for the development of adaptation and resilience strategies.

    While the effects of conventional threats such as Earthquakes, Storms, EMP, Blast Overpressure, Chemical, Radiological and Biological Weapons are well established and readily mitigated, the possible effects of a Mayan 2012 Threat Event Scenario required Hardened Structures to expand theoretically the analysis of anticipatory threat identifications and mitigation measures.

    Some of the anticipated effects of the 2012 phenomenon include:

    MAGENTIC POLE SHIFT

    For reasons that are still debated and not fully understood, according to geological records, the Earth's magnetic poles have traded places about 170 times in the past 76 million years. With at least 14 of those reversals occurring in the last 4.5 million years alone. The symptoms of a coming pole shift typically are abrupt changes in weather patterns and a rapid weakening of the planet's magnetic field - both of which are happening now. There are several Threat Event Scenarios resulting from this magnetic pole shift including:

    * Tectonic shifting
    * Increase in volcanic activity both above ground and underwater
    * Global glaciations of the northern hemisphere
    * Floods and giant snowstorms
    * Increase in coronal magnetic eruptions (CME) from the Sun
    * Earthquakes and landslides
    * Severe storms
    * Significant loss of cropland and population center disruption

    While the solar cycles and magnetic pole reversals are very real and have occurred previously, this has have never happened while 6 billion people inhabited our planet - with the vast majority of those people dependent on the electrical power grid. Regardless of your specific interpretation of this Threat Event Scenario, Hardened Structures has already compiled numerous design mitigations for the effects of magnetic pole shifts.

    SOLAR FLARES AND SUN SPOTS

    Astronomers have determined that the sun experiences regular cycles of intense magnetic storms known as sunspots or solar flares, caused by coronal magnetic eruptions (CME), averaging in duration about 11 years each. According to NASA, the end of the last sun storm cycle ended on March 10, 2006 when all solar flares on the sun became quiet - signaling an end to the most recent sunspot cycle. This also marks the beginning of the next cycle which, according to the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colorado, will be about 30 to 50 percent stronger than the previous one. They predict the most intense date for the solar flares to be late in 2012, coinciding with the Mayan calculations for the sun's galactic alignment. Because this phenomenon has never occurred with the population and technology we have today, no one knows for certain what effects these solar storms may have on our future. What we do know for certain is large influxes of energy from the sun drive extreme weather patterns causing hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards. This influx of energy is what creates La Nina, El Nino and the incredible display of the Northern Lights.

    Based on future scanning theoretical and anticipatory analysis, Hardened Structures has devised several worse-case scenarios and has formulated designs and plans for mitigating each scenario. A 50 percent stronger solar cycle could be catastrophic and result in huge, Katrina-size storms one after another. The results would be complete power outages, bridges and roads destroyed, oil refineries destroyed, communities devastated, infrastructures ruined, lives lost and the possible collapse of our economy.

    ELECTROMAGNETIC OR GEOMAGNETIC PULSE (EMP)

    An Electromagnetic Pulse can be generated by either a nuclear EMP attack or by solar storms called a Geomagnetic EMP. A severe solar storm can produce geomagnetic storms when combined with Coronal Mass Ejections (CME). CMEs produce huge clouds of plasma that generate strong magnetic fields. In 1972, a 230,000 volt transformer in Canada exploded when rapidly shifting magnetic fields caused by solar weather induced excessive current in the grid. On March 13, 1989, millions of homes and businesses were plunged into darkness when a solar storm caused a blackout in Quebec.

    But perhaps the largest known CME occurred just before noon on September 1, 1859, and lasted 8 days. The Carrington Event, named after the astronomer Richard Carrington who observed the solar activity as it occurred, caused significant disruption on Earth. According to scientists at the European Space Agency "The entire Earth was engulfed in a gigantic cloud of seething gas, and a blood red aurora erupted across the planet from the poles to the tropics. Around the world, telegraph systems crashed, machines burst into flames and electric shocks rendered operators unconscious. Compasses and other sensitive instruments reeled as if struck by a massive electric fist." For the first time in recorded history, people throughout the Caribbean were treated to spectacular displays of the Aurora Borealis. Of course, 1859 technology was quite low in comparison to today's technology, the telegraph had only been invented 15 years prior.

    The earth is protected from the harmful effects of solar radiation by its magnetic field, called the magnetosphere. Cracks in the field were discovered in 2003 by both NASA and the European Space Agency and the cracks have since damaged satellites during transit through it.

    If a CME event of the size and intensity that occurred ion 1859 happened today, it is estimated that the power grid will take between 2 and 10 years to be restored and the following effects will occur:

    * Municipal water will run out in 48 hours
    * Sewage systems will stop operating within 2 weeks
    * Refrigeration will immediately cease
    * Hospitals and nursing homes will experience a drastic increase in deaths due to shortages in medicine
    * Food will run out at the grocery stores with 3 days
    * 97% of all manufacturing will cease
    * Crop cultivation will decrease by 80%
    * Food riots and civil unrest will occur within 7 days

    At Hardened Structures, we employ some of the world's best known EMP mitigation experts and designers. We can design your shelter to withstand almost any size EMP or Geomagnetic event.
