The Web’s Creator Looks to Reinvent It

    JUNE 7, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO — Twenty-seven years ago, Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web as a way for scientists to easily find information. It has since become the world’s most powerful medium for knowledge, communications and commerce — but that doesn’t mean Mr. Berners-Lee is happy with all of the consequences.

“It controls what people see, creates mechanisms for how people interact,” he said of the modern day web. “It’s been great, but spying, blocking sites, repurposing people’s content, taking you to the wrong websites — that completely undermines the spirit of helping people create.”

So on Tuesday, Mr. Berners-Lee gathered in San Francisco with other top computer scientists — including Brewster Kahle, head of the nonprofit Internet Archive and an internet activist — to discuss a new phase for the web.

Today, the World Wide Web has become a system that is often subject to control by governments and corporations. Countries like China can block certain web pages from their citizens, and cloud services like Amazon Web Services hold powerful sway. So what might happen, the computer scientists posited, if they could harness newer technologies — like the software used for digital currencies, or the technology of peer-to-peer music sharing — to create a more decentralized web with more privacy, less government and corporate control, and a level of permanence and reliability?

Thank goodness there are warriors out there figuring out how to pull control back to the people (and decentralize...) before it's too late.  There needs to be awareness and alternatives to the current systems (like those used on the web) that have basically taken over all aspects of our lives.

I've noticed China's government (those in control of it...) is always mentioned like the de facto example of censorship and control over its citizens.  It's getting to be just as bad everywhere else but nobody wants to admit it.  Insidious approaches to censorship and control over people include their (subtle and not-so-subtly) forced use of popular search engines like Google, social networks like Facebook and Twitter, video sharing sites like YouTube, and information gathering sites like Wikipedia.

With mostly everyone using these... tools, this ensures that power and control over entire populations in the hands of a specific few only grows.  That combined with cell phones, Smart Meters and related wireless technologies (eg. Internet of Things) that they have 'conveniently' supplied for us... it has become a nightmare.  All that on top of their continued control over the corrupted agenda-specific mainstream media (and Hollywood) turned-propaganda machine, 'uneducated' sickness-driven society/culture etc... you can see where this is headed.  It's a 'creeping paralysis' on all fronts.

Are we having fun yet? tongue
