- Just 10 minutes of simple exercises a day can hold back the years
- Best way of reducing risk of becoming frail and prone to disease later on
- Routine focusing on strength, suppleness and skill is easy to do every day
In our life-changing series, one of Britain’s top doctors has been explaining how you really can stay feeling younger for longer by following a few simple tips.
Yesterday, he revealed how doctors stay youthful.
Today, he shows how just 10 minutes of simple exercises a day can hold back the years. Just take a moment to think about the word ‘fitness’ — what images does it conjure up? Young bodies, Lycra, fast-paced exercise classes at the gym? Of course, it’s true that fitness is important when you’re young. But what too many of us fail to understand is that it’s actually crucial for anyone aged from around 50 upwards. The reason is simple. There is no better way of vastly reducing the risk of becoming frail, dependent and prone to disease later on, when you’re in your 80s and 90s. Indeed, I can make you a promise. If you take action to get fitter every year during your 50s, 60s and 70s, you’re very likely to reach old age in a much better physical and mental condition than your peers.
There’s no guarantee that fitness training will extend your life.
But even if it doesn’t, you’re overwhelmingly likely to experience a much shorter period of disability and dependency before you turn up your toes.
Best of all, you don’t have to spend hours at the gym to achieve this. Exercise is not a punishment: simple routines can easily be incorporated into your daily life — and they really don’t have to be dull.
