Mysterious hum driving people crazy around the world
It creeps in slowly in the dark of night, and once inside, it almost never goes away. It's known as the Hum, a steady, droning sound that's heard in places as disparate as Taos, N.M.; Bristol, England; and Largs, Scotland. But what causes the Hum, and why it only affects a small percentage of the population in certain areas, remain a mystery, despite a number of scientific investigations. [The Top 10 Unexplained Phenomena] Reports started trickling in during the 1950s from people who had never heard anything unusual before; suddenly, they were bedeviled by an annoying, low-frequency humming, throbbing or rumbling sound. The cases seem to have several factors in common: Generally, the Hum is only heard indoors, and it's louder at night than during the day. It's also more common in rural or suburban environments; reports of a hum are rare in urban areas, probably because of the steady background noise in crowded cities.

    Who hears the Hum?
Only about 2 percent of the people living in any given Hum-prone area can hear the sound, and most of them are ages 55 to 70, according to a 2003 study by acoustical consultant Geoff Leventhall of Surrey, England. Most of the people who hear the Hum (sometimes referred to as "hearers" or "hummers") describe the sound as similar to a diesel engine idling nearby. And the Hum has driven virtually every one of them to the point of despair. [Video: Listen to 6 Spooky Sounds] "It's a kind of torture; sometimes, you just want to scream," retiree Katie Jacques of Leeds, England, told the BBC. Leeds is one of several places in Great Britain where the Hum has recently appeared."It's worst at night," Jacques said. "It's hard to get off to sleep because I hear this throbbing sound in the background. … You're tossing and turning, and you get more and more agitated about it."  Read more at: http://www.nbcnews.com/science/mysterious-hum-driving-people-crazy-around-world-6C10760872

Nocturnal Disturbances and the Infrasonic “HUM”

Mysterious hum driving people crazy around the world Hum2

The following essay offers a new perspective on phenomena which have captivated national interest for several years now. This perspective is the result of a continual observation of the phenomenon, with a concomitant effort directed toward elimination of many of the associated local neuralgia effects. The article is not intended to represent a completed experimental project by any means, but is merely an introduction to the topic area from a more definitive vantage. It is hoped that a renewed experimental research may determine the exact details of the HUM phenomenon along these more clarified avenues of thought. It is noteworthy that, in every aspect, such phenomena mirror those which compelled Baron Karl von Reichenbach into his legendary researches. The fruits of such study contain equally prodigious and monumental discoveries, an encouragement for those who will seek and find.

A great host of individuals throughout North America and Northern Europe have reported the reception of nocturnal auditory disturbances, collectively termed “the HUM”. No modern text offers explanation for the national mystery. It is for this reason that we will collate some of the subjectively discerned phenomena, empirically observed effects whose nature offers us the clearest direction toward understanding the HUM source. The HUM is heard by an increasing population of persons who are awakened nightly by its annoying and sometimes painful performance. So panregional have these reports been, and so credible the observers of the phenomenon, that one is compelled to affirm the existence of the effect. While the objective data received through reliable reporters may realistically be questioned in moments of scientific doubt, one is convinced of its reality after encountering the experience firsthand.

The HUM represents several simultaneous anomalies for those well versed in the lore of natural anomalies, an audio phenomenon which challenges the very basic notions of sense, perception, and world process. On the validity of personal experience and experimental verifications of a precursory development, I have therefore decided to make several statements concerning the HUM phenomenon and its associated effects. Indeed, I have also chosen to elucidate somewhat on the HUM to provoke dialogue between the mechanists and the biodynamicists.
