There are many battles on many fronts and these are just a small number of victories.
Nope, I don't think we're winning just yet, but a day will come in the desperation of tptb to make a fookin big mistake that will be the nail in their coffins.. I am a firm believer in the butterfly effect and perhaps already their mistake has come to pass and so we wait for the snowball to grow as it rolls down the hill.

So yes, I remain hopeful but just now, I would not say we're winning.

WE WON.

Tonight, we stood up. We stood up and said NO to corporate control of our energy future. But more importantly, we said yes to something so much bigger: people.

Yes, this was a campaign about energy. About our planet. About a corporation that just refuses to change. But all along what it was really about was people. People made this victory possible.

People like you: The one who lives in Alabama and mailed us your laptop for our phone-banks. The one we phone-banked to talk about the issue and then came by our office an hour later to drop off drinks for our volunteers who were working late. You sent us the only money you had in your pocket, you brought us food, you spent every Saturday volunteering, and you sent us the kindest notes from around the world that kept our team going. You have moved us to tears, energized us to reach beyond our capacity, and sustained us through each day. You renewed our belief that our communities are strong enough to bring about the changes we need–and you made us certain that we would prevail.

For the second time, our grassroots campaign defeated a coal industry giant.

And for the second time, it is crystal clear: Xcel’s dirty money can’t buy community, trick voters, or inspire young voters to enter the political process. It can’t spark neighbor-to-neighbor outreach. It can’t mobilize a diehard army of volunteers.
Only people can do that. And boy–did we have people.

Over 1 million of you watched the story of our campaign. Over 6,000 of you gave to grow our reach. And because of that support, our volunteers and organizers were able to log over 100,000 voter contacts. In short, this has been the definition of a grassroots campaign because of you.

For those of you far away: This fight has always been as much about our community as it is about yours. Thank you for supporting us, for sticking with us till the end. Honestly, without you, we might have lost our democracy to the highest bidder this round.
But now, with this behind us, we are able to continue working to create a model for how communities around the country can take control of their energy future.

Our communities need an impactful strategy to combat climate change. We are proud to have fought for this one alongside each of you, and we look forward to the work ahead.

For now, though, we have this to say: Go home, Xcel. Your money is no good here.

Now get some sleep.

Bhutan Goes Organic



Remember Bhutan, the happiest country in Asia? The first country to coin the term ‘gross national happiness’ (GNH) and to survey its people under that term for general well-being? We remember seeing Michael J. Fox in his ABC special, The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist, a couple of years ago, where he travelled around the world looking for hope and optimism – and landed in Bhutan. Here he experienced what it was like to be in the eighth happiest country in the world, and astonishingly, attributed a reduction in his symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease to being there.

Once again Bhutan has come to our attention recently for declaring at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit this year, that it intends to turn it’s agriculture 100% organic by 2020, making it the first country in the world to undertake such a task. Brilliant!

The Kingdom of Bhutan is a small state in the eastern end of the Himalayas, bordered by China and India. They are a Buddhist, mostly agrarian nation with 70% of their land covered in forests. They apparently only opened their borders to the outside world 30 years ago, when among other things, they lifted a ban on TV because they thought it would help the general populace with their GNH.

Let’s hope they succeed. Can a country actually live sustainably? The world will be watching – and it seems it is already catching on: Race for NZ to be world’s first 100% organic food producer

10 Signs The Global Elite Are Losing Control


Karma is coming for the elite in a big way. As the Powers That Be head toward a devastating defeat in their war plans for Syria, signs are emerging that their rule over humanity is rapidly diminishing.

Over the last decade the global elite have been on a mad dash to consolidate power over the world. It’s always been their plan like some evil villain in a comic book, but after 9/11 the plan went into overdrive and then turbo charged during the financial crisis of 2008.

Yet it’s doomed to fail because humans are meant to be guided by their own free will, not controlled like livestock. The more the elite try to control humanity, the more entropy occurs. Entropy, for those who don’t know, is the lack of order or predictability; a gradual decline into disorder.

Although the elite still enjoy a huge wealth advantage over the masses, they are now resigned to behaving like tyrants to maintain control. This, in turn, exposes their dark side which has been cleverly concealed for ages. Not anymore.

People are waking up in droves, at least as fast as the elite can build their full-spectrum prison matrix. Let them try. To paraphrase Victor Hugo, “No army can stop an idea whose time has come.”

Here are ten signs that the elite are losing control over the people:

1. Official lies no longer effective: The lies they tell simply don’t work anymore. There was a time when official lies, especially about war and peace, were believed. Because, after all, how evil would it be to lie about such things? Generally people want to believe they are being told the truth when life and death is at stake. The boy who cried wolf has cried one too many times. Even if they told the truth at this point, very few would believe them.
2. No confidence in politics: US politicians have a paltry approval rating. The trust in government is at all-time lows here and around the world. Mainstream polls show only 10% of the public has confidence in Congress. In other words, 90% don’t believe in them to be competent to govern.

3. No confidence in media: The most recent polls show that 77% of the population no longer trusts corporate TV news. Is it any wonder why the establishment media failed to sell the lies about the alleged Syria chemical event? With all their monopoly might over the airwaves, they can no longer claim that black is white simply because officialdom says so.

4. Bankers rejected: Hungary recently became the first country to follow Iceland’s lead by shedding international bankers (IMF) and is considering pursuing prosecution of past prime ministers who enslaved the people with debt.

India Declares Dolphins "Non-Human Persons", Dolphin shows BANNED.


India’s Ministry of Environment and Forests has decided to forbid the keeping of captive dolphins for public entertainment anywhere in the country.
In a policy statement released Friday, the ministry advised state governments to reject any proposal to establish a dolphinarium “by any person / persons, organizations, government agencies, private or public enterprises that involves import, capture of cetacean species to establish for commercial entertainment, private or public exhibition and interaction purposes whatsoever.”

Why?
“Whereas cetaceans in general are highly intelligent and sensitive, and various scientists who have researched dolphin behavior have suggested that the unusually high intelligence; as compared to other animals means that dolphins should be seen as ‘non-human persons’ and as such should have their own specific rights and is morally unacceptable to keep them captive for entertainment purpose,” the ministry said.
I was surprised to read about this the other night, since it happened back in May and somehow escaped worldwide attention and the 24 hour media hoopla. The effort to re-categorize Cetaceans (dolphins, whales, porpoises) as non-human persons has been gathering steam since a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011 where a group of philosophers, conservationists, and animal behaviorists attempted to gather wide support for a Declaration of Rights for Cetaceans from the scientific community.
The Declaration:

1. Every individual cetacean has the right to life.
2. No cetacean should be held in captivity or servitude; be subject to cruel treatment; or be removed from their natural environment.
3. All cetaceans have the right to freedom of movement and residence within their natural environment.
4. No cetacean is the property of any State, corporation, human group or individual.
5. Cetaceans have the right to the protection of their natural environment.
6. Cetaceans have the right not to be subject to the disruption of their cultures.
7. The rights, freedoms and norms set forth in this Declaration should be protected under international and domestic law.

He tried and failed to break the news at a GMO Seminar which took place on January 22 and was organized by Chilean Agriculture Secretary, Luis Mayol. There, international and national speakers preached about the goodness of GMO crops. Pizarro only wanted to speak out to the audience and share that he did not recommend any farmer to work for Monsanto growing GMO seeds for export, because they could end up ruined as he did, besides damaging the soil.

In Chile there are approximately 30,000 hectares of GMO maize, soy and canola grown for export, marketed by transnational biotech corporations such as Monsanto, Pioneer and its Chilean partners, gathered under ANPROS, Asociación Nacional de Productores de Semillas (National Association of Seed Producers).

After Crisis, Greeks Work to Promote ‘Social’ Economy

ALONIA, Greece — The feisty owner of a small family business that makes detergents has never had time for anticapitalist firebrands. So he was suspicious and skeptical when he was approached by left-leaning activists campaigning to purge “profiteers” from the market.

But, struggling to keep his business afloat under the weight of unpaid invoices and constant demands for bribes, the owner, Savvas Mavromatis, decided to give their proposal a shot. He started selling his products directly to consumers for cash at fixed prices through a nonprofit collective, instead of to shops and traders as he had always done.

Fourteen months later, he credits the group with saving his enterprise from a Greek economic meltdown that rivals the Great Depression.

“We are in the middle of a terrible crisis and are just looking for solutions,” said Elias Tsolakidis, the driving force behind the so-called no-middlemen movement here in northern Greece, a small, quixotic but surprisingly successful effort to redefine the terms of commerce. “We don’t have a magic wand. We are not communists and we are not capitalists, but we are trying to help people survive.”

In their search for solutions, Greeks are tinkering with a new kind of economy with little precedent in modern Europe. The collapse of the Greek economy is challenging not only the survival of Greeks, but also some of the basic mechanisms of capitalism in a nation where the economy has shrunk by about 25 percent since 2008.

In the view of widening numbers here, Greece’s market-driven system has broken down, a victim of endemic corruption, budgetary mismanagement by the state and the overbearing demands of global financial markets.

In response, experimental ventures like the one Mr. Mavromatis joined have sprung up on the margins in towns and cities across Greece. While they may not offer a long-term solution, and are too small to alter the overall shape of the economy, they represent a bottom-up effort to address an economic crisis whose closest antecedent may be the aftermath of World War II.

Attacks on modern profit-driven capitalism are hardly new in Greece, where Syriza, a coalition of radical leftist forces, narrowly lost the last national election in 2012 and, according to opinion polls, is now the country’s most popular party. Its leader, Alexis Tsipras, decorates his party’s office in Athens with a poster of the revolutionary icon Che Guevara.

Utah Is Ending Homelessness By Giving People Homes


It seems a tragic paradox that there are more empty houses in the United States than there are homeless people, yet 1,75,000 individuals still remain on the street, and almost 1/3 of them go hungry every day. Overlooked by those with modern conveniences, it seems a common occurrence for struggling souls on the street to be ignored in the midst of crisis.

There is mixed reception on the issue. Some cities detest homeless people lingering about in parks or around busy, metropolitan areas during the day:

City council members in Colombia, South Carolina, were concerned that the city was becoming a “magnet” for homeless people, therefore they passed an ordinance giving the homeless an option to either relocate or get arrested. After backlash from police offers, city workers, and advocates, however, the council later rescinded the ordinance.
Philadelphia passed a law that banned the feeding of homeless people on city parkland. Religious groups objected to the ban, and announced they would not obey it.

In 2013, the city of Tampa, Florida – which had the most homeless people for a mid-sized city – passed an ordinance allowing police officers to arrest anyone they saw sleeping in public, or “storing personal property in public.” The city later followed up with a ban on panhandling downtown, and other locations around the city.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, the city asked religious groups to stop their longstanding practice of feeding the homeless on city parkland. Not surprisingly, religious leaders announced that they would risk arrest rather than stop.
And then there are those who are fed up with the situation, adopting extreme tactics to cope with the mess of frustration.

Earlier this month, Hawaii State Representative, Tom Bower, began walking the streets of Waikiki district with a sledgehammer, smashing shopping carts owned by homeless people. “Disgusted” by the city’s chronic homelessness problem, he literally took matters into his own hands. But the reception to his over-the-top actions gained him no popularity, therefore he shortly thereafter declared, “mission accomplished”, and retired his sledgehammer.
Refusing to acknowledge the homelessness crisis will not resolve the issue, however. That’s why Utah’s actions are so commendable.

In the past eight years, Utah has quietly reduced homelessness by 78 percent, and is on track to completely end homelessness by 2015.

How did this state accomplish such a noteworthy feat? Quite simply: Utah solved homelessness by giving people homes. In 2013, the state recognized that that the annual cost of E.R. visits and jail stays for homeless people was about $16,670 per person, compared to $11,000 to provide each homeless person with an apartment and a social worker.

With this intelligence, the state began giving away apartments – with no strings attached. Each participant in Utah’s Housing First program also receives a case worker to help them become self-sufficient, but they can keep the apartment even if they fail. The program has been so successful, other states are hoping to achieve similar results with programs modeled on Utah’s.

Poland Announces Complete Ban on Monsanto’s GMO Corn

Following the anti-Monsanto activism launched by nations like France and Hungary, Poland has announced that it will launch a complete ban on growing Monsanto’s genetically modified strain MON810. The announcement, made by Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki, sets yet another international standard against Monsanto’s genetically modified creations. In addition to being linked to a plethora health ailments, Sawicki says that the pollen originating from this GM strain may actually be devastating the already dwindling bee population.

“The decree is in the works. It introduces a complete ban on the MON810 strain of maize in Poland,” Sawicki stated to the press.

Similar opposition to Monsanto occurred on March 9th, when 7 European countries blocked a proposal by the Danish EU presidency which would permit the cultivation of genetically modified plants on the entire continent. It was France, who in February, lead the charge against GMOs by asking the European Commission to suspend authorization to Monsanto’s genetically modified corn. What’s more, the country settled a landmark case in favor of the people over Monsanto, finding the biotech giant guilty of chemical poisoning.

Hunters in Iran Destroy Their Weapons, Vow to Stop Killing


“Imagine all the people, living life in peace.” It might have been easy to call Lennon a dreamer at the turning of the age, but now it seems ideals envisioned by the few may actually be turning into reality.

In Iran’s Kurdistan region, hunters have made an incredible vow to change their ways for the sake of wildlife. They’ve burned their traps, broken their rifles, and are vowing to now stand in solidarity with animals they once targeted.

This move came just two weeks after the Iranian environmental ministry released a report indicating that 74 species that are native to the country have been placed on the red list of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. This means they are in danger of becoming extinct from human activity.

According to France 24, conservationist from Chya met with local hunters individually to inform them of the threats posed by hunting – both illegal and legal – and successfully convinced 19 of them to take an oath to protect the region’s biodiversity.

Veteran hunter, Hossein Ahmadi, relayed that this was an easy decision, especially because he had seen the impact over-hunting has caused first-hand.

Mayans of the Campeche Region have just won a two-year legal battle to get rid of Monsanto and their GMO soybeans (suicide beans). Following the ban of GM maize in Mexico, this ancient and agriculturally savvy culture has won a major battle against biotech monopolies around the globe. The Second District Court ruled in favor of three Mayan communities from the Hopelchén township who dared to take on the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock , Rural Development, Fisheries and Food ( Sagarpa) and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources ( SEMARNAT).

This means that Saragapa now must make a concerted effort to be sure that no GM soybeans are planted throughout Pachen and Cancabchen communities in Hopelchén. Just two years ago, the same agency allowed Monsanto’s RoundUp Ready GMO soybeans to be planted in the region – infecting more than 253,000 hectares with suicide seeds that cause human infertility and poison the environment.

World's two biggest clothiers go deforestation-free

The world's two largest clothing brands are among those that have just commited to eliminate pulp from ancient and endangered forests from all of their rayon and viscose clothing.

This sends a powerful signal to the logging and pulp sectors that market demands are shifting.
The companies, retail and design leaders H&M and Zara/Inditex, developed these new purchasing commitments in partnership with environmental organization Canopy.

The sustainability brand Loomstate, EILEEN FISHER, Quiksilver, and 17 other brands and designers are also backing the 'Fashion Loved by Forest' campaign - an initiative to address the growing impacts of the clothing industry on the world's forests, biodiversity and climate.

"These clothing sector leaders are showing that being stylish doesn't have to cost the earth", said Nicole Rycroft, Canopy's Executive Director.

From forest to tank-top

Canopy research has found that threatened forests are routinely making their way into clothing. Rayon, viscose, modal and other trademarked fabrics are increasingly made from the world's most endangered forests, from the tropical rainforests of Indonesia to the great northern Boreal Forests.

Globally rare forests are cut down, pulped and spun into suit jacket linings, dresses, skirts, t-shirts and tank tops.

The pulp/viscose industry is poised for continued ambitious expansion and poses an increasing risk to threatened forest ecosystems around the world. But the promises made by these brands will help curtail the problem and build solutions.

Last year, an estimated 70 million trees were cut for fabric production, a number projected to double in the next 20 years. The last intact rainforests of Indonesia are falling at an alarming rate and species such as the critically endangered orang utan may vanish within our lifetimes if this trend is not reversed.

The global apparel industry is a $1.2 trillion sector with enormous market and cultural influence.
