The unjustified arrest and imprisonment of this civil rights lawyer which began during the Bush administration is tragic. After being convicted in 2006 for conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists in this instance Sheik Omar-Abdel Rahman...hers was a simple mistake in the defense of her client...she didn't sign the (SAMs)...U.S. Bureau of Prisons Special Administrative Measures. The SAMs are unconstitutional and constitute a violation of both the First Amendment and the Sixth Amendment right to legal counsel.
The Clinton administration didn't consider Lynne a traitor or terrorist. Her case was just an administrative violation. However after 911, John Ashcroft then attorney-general, went on a hysterical rampage to David Letterman's show to tell the Nation that Lynne Stewart was a traitor and terrorist because she had chosen to defend a terrorist and give him his rights to legal counsel.
In December/2009 Lynne started serving a twenty-eight month prison term in Texas which has now evolved into a ten year prison term after bail being revoked arbitrarily. She is very sick now from Stage Four breast cancer which in 2009 had been in remission. Her incarceration has delayed her surgery by eighteen months and now she is facing a virtual death sentence if she stays in prison.
