OTTAWA —Canadian police and intelligence agencies have made arrests in connection with a planned major terrorist attack, says the RCMP.
An RCMP official said Monday the police force would announce details at an afternoon news conference of several arrests in Ontario and Quebec related to the terror plot.
CBC News reported Monday the alleged plotters were reportedly under surveillance in Quebec and southern Ontario for more than a year.
The CBC reports that the investigation that led to the arrests stemmed from a cooperative effort involving law enforcement agencies in Canada, and the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
No other details about the operation were being reported — apart from that the arrests were executed by a special task force from the RCMP and CSIS anti-terrorism units, along with provincial and municipal police forces in Ontario and Quebec.
The arrests were reportedly not connected to the two brothers who were accused in last week’s bombing in the Boston Marathon.
As well, sources tell the CBC there is no connection to another high-profile incident — in which friends from a London, Ont. High school joined Al-Qaeda and died earlier this year when they took hostages at an Algerian gas refinery.
