Obama and Romney: A “debate” without real differences
    By Patrick Martin
    Global Research, October 04, 2012

The first debate of the US presidential election campaign laid bare the unbridgeable gulf between the corporate-controlled political system and the concerns of the overwhelming majority of the American people.

The United States is in the grip of the worst social crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s, with record levels of long-term unemployment, record levels of hunger and homelessness, mass layoffs of workers in the public schools and other essential services, deteriorating public infrastructure and deepening poverty and social misery.

Aside from two sentences from Romney—in the course of proposing measures that would make the crisis even worse for working people—there was noreference to this social reality in 90 minutes of debate. The words “poverty” and “unemployment” never crossed Obama’s lips. Neither candidate offered any proposals to alleviate mass suffering, put the unemployed to work or rebuild public services devastated by budget cuts.

On the contrary, more than four years into an economic crisis brought on by the greatest financial collapse of the profit system since the 1930s, both candidates pledged their loyalty to Wall Street and hailed capitalism as the greatest boon to mankind.

Obama declared in his two-minute summation, clearly prepared in advance, “The genius of America is the free enterprise system.” Romney, himself the possessor of a huge personal fortune based on stripping the assets of companies and speculating in the financial markets, repeatedly argued that the “private sector” had to be given free rein in every sphere of life, from job-creation to education to health care.

Obama made only one timid reference to the role of Wall Street in wrecking the US and world economy. Even there, he equated the swindlers and the swindled, saying that the workers hoodwinked into taking out sub-prime mortgages and the bankers who pocketed huge bonuses by fleecing them were both guilty of “reckless behavior.”

Obama also refrained from identifying Romney personally with Wall Street. In the course of the nationally televised event, he made no mention of Romney’s role as a corporate raider at Bain Capital, Romney’s refusal to release his tax returns, or his use of offshore investment accounts.

Most significantly, he made no reference to Romney’s disparaging comments about the “47 percent” of Americans dependent on government programs and too poor to pay federal income taxes, and his assertion that no one in America should consider himself “entitled” to food, health care or a roof over his head.

Based on conventional electoral considerations, this silence would appear inexplicable. Obama campaign television commercials have hammered Romney on his “47 percent” remarks for two weeks, and Romney’s poll numbers declined as a consequence.

It is clear, however, that in preparing for the first debate, with an estimated television audience of 60 million, the largest of the campaign, Obama and his political handlers viewed any hint of economic populism as too dangerous. It might offend the Wall Street power brokers and encourage a militant response from below.

The month of September has already seen two major strikes erupt in urban centers, with workers rebelling against cuts demanded by Democratic mayors with close ties to the Obama administration. In Chicago, 26,000 teachers walked out for a week, and in Detroit, water and sewage workers went on strike and initially defied a court injunction and their own union officials.

There were considerable efforts in the media before the debate to frame the contest between Romney and Obama as a titanic duel of deeply opposed philosophical standpoints. This carried over into the questions posed by the moderator, Jim Lehrer of the Public Broadcasting System, who began each segment of the debate by asking the candidates to outline their differences on a particular domestic issue: in other words, to focus on the 1 percent on which they disagreed, rather than the 99 percent they had in common.

The hoax still have strong legs.

John F Kennedy made it very clear in his last public address, this is not verbatim, but pretty close: "There is a small group of men behind the curtains of government who are making decisions that serve their own interests/agendas. Translation: Your presidents are figureheads. The election process is a hoax designed to make the people believe they still have a voice...They still have power.

Washington is too corrupt for any human to successfully and safely go in there and make true changes based on constitutional and civilian rights and equality for all. If such a candidate exist, the corporations would simply spend them out of existence.

The existence of a Democratic and Republican party is the greatest divisive mechanism that exist today in this country, surpassing race, religion and gender.

What are you going to do about it?

The bit in bold rings true. I said in an earlier post with the slightest hint of understatement, that the two party system over there is far from ideal. It is a choice of two evils. Having said that from an international relations perspective, Obama would be the favoured outcome as Romney is quite clearly ill equipped to deal with foreign issues, plus being a Monsanto whore makes voting for him repulsive.

What then are the options for Americans? Ron Paul or independents. Not realistic.
Neo con Christian militia taking arms and rising against the White House?
Aliens coming to land on the white House Lawn to run the world on behalf of the Peoples Federation of Arcturus etc? Lol.
    Kermit? Maybe

In the past, three non mainstream political religious leaders had pretensions to become president of America and run the country as an alien/divinely led theocracy, all of which obviously failed.

One was the fascist alienist William Dudley Pelley, one was the fraudulent cult leader Guy Ballard who saw himself as a reincarnation of George Washington would rule under St Germain, and Joseph Smith leader of the Mormons was the third who would rule as Christ's president. A fourth candidate George Lincoln Rockwell ran as a write in with the American Nazi party. There are other lunatics who had a go no doubt.

The alternatives were not great but the reality is the alternatives today are not good if non existent. Any US president is basically a puppet but it is their relation with foreign leaders that will decrease or increase the likelihood of war.

There is an alternative however. We already have Romney who is a numpty but today was announced the launch of the Muppet Party for a greener America.
Some may argue that America has had one muppet after the other for a leader but this is the real McCoy.

    Kermit for President

    The pond candidate?
At least it's clear from the onset that he is a puppet.

That's easily understood when examining the other political candidates. These days it's just one horror and nightmare story after another. I wonder how things would have gone if Bush Sr. had never been born.

Instead of 'send in the clowns' it's now 'send in the clones.'

Carol, did you read 'Family of Secrets' regarding the Bush clan?? I thought it was well written and very revealing. However, I think I might like to study Presidents, Popes, and Queens -- and positively reinforce the best attributes that I find. I don't doubt that every single one of them have been manipulated from the shadows -- but I still think that their best traits should be emulated -- and their best words taken seriously.

Recent reports suggest that Kermit's late popularity boost in the polls comes from 'class A' endorsements from Alf, Big Bird and the Thunderbirds.

Word from the pond is that this has gone down well and boosted morale. A late surge is expected.

Kermit has controversially labelled Romney (rightly) as a being clueless moron, with a potato having more knowledge about international politics and foreign relations and being part of a religious establishment which wants to see America run by a pseudo Christian morally elite theocracy from the white house.
He has also accused ultra conservative republicans of being 'corporate fascist libertarians without the testicles' not wishing to lose their government salary.
The frog later went on to admit however, that even that's a better option than having a load of right wing anarchists running around like headless chickens in an ideological daydream.
Kermit's supporters have also accused the Obama administration of putting up horrible wallpaper in the White House during their tenure there and says they must go. They are yet to decide if Obama is a nazi and half reptilian clone who wants to microchip all frogs in the state of Alabama for the singular reason just to annoy them.

    Obama Wins.

Im sure the right and Christian Fundamentalists will be squirming in their boots now the US has its first gay senator and that a 'non American Islamaphile' has been reelected president lol.

Those losers over at conspiracy rag worldnetdaily must be having collective massive heart attacks lol.

This is one of the reason I rarely bother with conspiracy forums these days. Alien landings, solar storm catastrophes, heliocentric bullshit, reptilian muslim presidents, piloted crafts and moon sized objects blah blah.
    Dull.

Epic fail after epic fail after facepalm after facepalm

Time would be much better spent on dealing with the various ecological catastrophes that are being denied and propagandized by the banksters,Zionists and their stooges, the cooperate fascist libertarians, whose only interests are greed and money at any cost of people or planet.

Sure, the way that one house in DC is Republican and the other Democrat ensures that the title of presidency is somewhat cosmetic but its always great to see the Christian fundamentalist right and other nutjobs with their eye wiped. Netanyahu will not be so pleased Romney failed and will be stepping up his war mongering rhetoric know he has lost the voice of the american right.

    Goodbye Mitt.
