July 11, 2012, SPAIN -Thousands of miners and supporters march, in protest against government austerity measures, through the centre of Madrid. Joined by supporters and trade unionists in the capital, the miners rallied noisily at the climax of a 44-day protest against a 60 percent cut in coal subsidies which they say will force mines to close and put many out of work.

    UPDATE:

Violent clashes have been reported including police using rubber bullets aginst protesters. At least 76 people are thought to be injured included a journalist and 33 police officers. Eight people have been taken to hospital for further treatment.

One image being circulated online shows a woman with severe bleeding from her head, surrounded by riot police.
    Photo: http://exiledonline.com/shocking-video-from-spain-protest-austerity-gestapo-brutally-attacks-peaceful-protesters-over-76-injured-and-counting/

Seven people have been arrested, according to the authorities.

Hundreds of miners from across Spain marched into Madrid last night ahead of a mass demonstration today (Weds) against severe austerity cuts which will leave 8,000 miners and 30,000 other people unemployed.
Unions say the 63 percent cut in subsidies will destroy coal mining, which relies on state aid to compete with cheaper imports.

The protests have already lasted for over a month and have seen violence between demonstrating miners, their supporters and police. Tear gas and rubber bullets have been used against demonstrators and journalists during clashes.

Powerful images of miners from Aragon, Asturias and Castile and Leon in the north have been shared on social media as the worker have marched over 400km to the capital. Their reception across Spain has been warm, with people lining the streets and cheering as they passed through towns.

Organisers expect as many as 25,000 people to join the demonstration in central Madrid.

At least 76 people have been injured in Madrid as clashes flared up between protesters and police, the latter using rubber bullets. Thousands of Spaniards turned out against new cuts introduced by the government.

Those injured include 33 police officers and 43 protesters – miners and their supporters.

Minor arrests have been made so far, with eight people being detained. Three of those arrested reportedly threw bricks at police, local El Pais newspaper reported. The police have confirmed that there were no miners among the arrested.

Protesters panicked and sought shelter as police began to disperse the crowd, Olvidio Gonzalez, 67, a retired miner from the northern Asturias region told AP.

“We were walking peacefully to get to where the union leaders were speaking and they started to fire indiscriminately,” said Gonzalez, who was also struck by a rubber bullet.

Witnesses and demonstrators claim that police started the attack without any warning.

"We were eating quietly when they began to appear with several police vans. Then we started to shout and some threw a few bottles, which gave rise to the charge," Hermann, a miner from the small town of Langreo in northern Spain, told El Pais.

About 200 people remained surrounded by dozens of police in front of parliament, Twitter user Danips posted on his microblog.

Some media reports suggest a spontaneous demonstration flared up in front of parliament. Protesters are calling on Spaniards via Twitter to join bigger protests at 19:30 local time.

Protesters disagree with a 63 per cent cut in subsidies to coal mining companies, major contributors to the Spanish energy market. Unions say the plan threatens 30,000 jobs and could destroy their livelihoods.

Miners, who were hiking from the north of the country for the past two weeks, have been joined by tens of thousands of Spaniards also protesting against Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s tax hike.

The prime minister announced his decision to raise VAT by 3 per cent as part of the plan to trim the public budget by 65 billion euro over the next two-and-a-half years. Rajoy also declared a 3.5-billion-euro cut to local government spending.

Many protesters marched more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) from mines in northern Spain.

As protesters call for more demonstrations to make their voices heard journalist and writer Miguel-Anxo Murado told RT that the government seems to underestimate the protests.

“They think they can cope with these protests partly because mining regions are localized in certain areas of the country. These are small areas. So they think that this will not affect the rest of the country. The truth is that the miners are getting a lot of solidarity because many people relate to them and see their problems as their own problems,” he said.

Carlos Delclos, a sociologist at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, is strongly critical of the role of Spain's prime minister in the current crisis.

“If Mariano Rajoy had any sense of decency, or even a fragment of dignity that the miners and the protesters have, then he would resign, along with the rest of his government,” he told RT. “He’s broken every campaign promise that he’s made, some even at comical levels. His entire party was saying that raising sales tax was unthinkable and all that, and now we have a 21-per-cent sales tax.”

He believes that the Spanish government’s actions, including its reaction to the protests, results from the long-lasting culture of impunity.

“What we are seeing is the impunity of a government that has a lot of people that pertain to groups that had affinity with the Franco government, the Fascist government, 40 years ago, and have never had to sit before trial since then,” he said.

Timothy Iacono i must say i had a lot of faith in the Spanish police to do something like this. The Spanish people are very cool and are a beautiful people with good hearts. i see them being a guiding light of the new ways. I love you Spain and I love your people. Please show the rest of Europe how to do it... We are watching.

Erica Svendsen I think anyone trying to say that police cannot be on our side is probably an agent ass outsider trying to squelch the truth of the inevitable success of the revolution from spreading. This is a non violent movement people, we don't hate our enemies, we wait for them to thank us for standing up for them before they came to their senses and join us!!!

July 19 - An estimated 1 MILLION in 80 cities take to the streets in Spain against austerity!

"Spanish police have clashed with protesters who marched against the latest batch of austerity measures. Over a million public employees, trade union members and fed-up citizens have taken to the streets in over 80 Spanish cities.

Violence erupted in Madrid around midnight. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd as it tried to reach the congress building. In some more urban areas, activists set garbage containers on fire and tried to block police vehicle access. No injuries or arrests have been reported."

Protesters flooded Madrid's main Puerta del Sol square and the streets in front of parliament late into the night. Large deployments of riot police manned barricades in front of the legislature, fearing rising tensions could lead to violence.

Large crowds also gathered in Barcelona and Bilbao, while leading Spanish newspaper El Pais estimated on its website that more than 100,000 had attended the rally in the capital.

"The protest was one of over 80 demonstrations called by unions across the county against civil servant pay cuts and tax hikes which drew tens of thousands of people, INCLUDING police and firefighters wearing their helmets.

"Hands up, this is a robbery!" protesters bellowed as they marched through the streets of the Spanish capital. http://news.yahoo.com/spain-workers-plan-mass-demos-against-cuts-181530139.html

POLICE BEAT UP SLEEPING HOMELESS IN FRONT OF PROTESTERS ''SPAIN, MADRID 2012''

How could anyone explain this picture! Police officers teaming up to brutally attack and beat up this sleeping homeless person. They are doing this right in front of protesters who are attending a peaceful demonstration. Is this a new tactic to intimidate and scare the protesters maybe? A message that peaceful protest is not accepted or supported by them? Or is it an order from a higher superior trying to invoke violence from protesters to put an end to the demonstration? If anybody knows, you tell us!
