Old MI5 records were released today showing that MI5 could not trace Chaplin's birth place or find his birth certificate. The Americans accused Chaplin of being a communist sympathiser and of funding communist groups, during their frantic reds under the bed episode and asked British intelligence to dig up the dirt on him. When he sailed back to the UK in the 50's the Americans said they didn't want to let him back in but MI5 insisted they could dig up any dirt on him.
Today's Daily Mail suggests he was born in near Birmingham though others have said he was a Russian immigrant.
