A San Francisco group dedicated to saving ancient redwood forests launched a fundraising campaign Tuesday to protect a grove of trees in northern Mendocino County.
The Save the Redwoods League is hoping to buy a 957-acre property known as Shady Dell Creek located just north of Fort Bragg and adjacent to the south end of Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. The site is part of the 50,000-acre Usal Forest and home to what the league describes as "ancient, mysterious redwoods" on the county's Lost Coast.
The league has named the fundraising drive the Lost Coast campaign, and declares it needs to raise $2 million by Dec. 31 or the property may be lost.
"This is an urgent situation in which the public will play a vital role," said Ruskin K. Hartley, the league's executive director. "By purchasing the Shady Dell property, we will safeguard another mile of California's world-renowned Lost Coast, protect a unique grove of gnarly ancient redwoods for all to experience and enjoy, and safeguard an important wild salmon stream."
According to the league, Shady Dell includes a mile of coast and is home to a "rich array of wildlife and an unusual, ancient redwood grove in which the trees are shaped like short-stemmed candelabras." The redwoods shaped by wind are known as the "Trees of Mystery."
