Japan sinking: Coast lowered by March quake, cities face daily floods at high tide

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/asia-pacific/japan-sinking-coast-lowered-by-march-quake-cities-face-daily-floods-at-high-tide/article2015026/

When water begins to trickle down the streets of her coastal neighbourhood, Yoshiko Takahashi knows it is time to hurry home.

Twice a day, the flow steadily increases until it is knee-deep, carrying fish and debris by her front door and trapping people in their homes. Those still on the streets slosh through the sea water in rubber boots or on bicycle.
The March 11 earthquake that hit eastern Japan was so powerful it pulled the entire country out and down into the sea. The mostly devastated coastal communities now face regular flooding, because of their lower elevation and damage to sea walls from the massive tsunamis triggered by the quake.

In port cities such as Onagawa and Kesennuma, the tide flows in and out among crumpled homes and warehouses along now uninhabited streets.

Third worker dies at Japan's troubled nuclear plant

TOKYO — A worker at Japan's tsunami-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant died on Saturday, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co said, bringing the death toll at the complex to three since a massive earthquake and tsunami in March.

Despite the prolonged nuclear crisis, Prime Minister Naoto Kan is set to announce at a G8 summit in France that Japan will keep using nuclear power, the Yomiuri newspaper said.

The cause of the worker's death was unknown. The man, in his 60s, was employed by one of Tokyo Electric's contractors and started working at the plant on Friday. He was exposed to 0.17 millisieverts of radiation on Saturday, Tokyo Electric said.

The Japanese government's maximum level of exposure for male workers at the plant is 250 millisieverts for the duration of the effort to bring it under control.

The worker fell ill 50 minutes after starting work at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday (5 p.m. EDT on Friday) and brought to the plant's medical room unconscious. He was later moved to a nearby hospital and confirmed dead, a Tokyo Electric spokesman said. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43031447/ns/world_news-asia_pacific/t/third-worker-dies-japans-troubled-nuclear-plant/

Japan disaster official death toll passes 15,000

The official death toll from Japan’s devastating March 11 quake and ensuing tsunami is now over 15,000, public broadcaster NHK says. According to the National Police Agency the number of dead, including the victims from two powerful aftershocks on April 7 and April 11, reached 15,019. The agency said 9,500 people were still missing. The highest toll was reported in Miyagi prefecture, where the disaster claimed 8,975 lives. Meanwhile, over 100,000 people are still living in shelters, mostly in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. The March 11 quake and tsunami triggered a nuclear emergency at Fukushima-1 plant and became the country’s worst crisis since World War II.

Radiation-Contaminated Region in North Japan Growing Rapidly

    Magnitude 9.1 - NEAR THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN - March 11, 2011 - Page 37 Image%5B5%5D

"The total area contaminated with radiation from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant is estimated at about 800 square kilometers, or about 40 percent the size of Tokyo, according to a radiation map created by the science ministry and U.S. Department of Energy. "

    See: http://www.asahi.com/english/TKY201105110159.html and http://blog.alexanderhiggins.com/2011/05/13/radiation-levels-higher-chernobyl-evacuation-limits-span-800-km-japan-22734/

With no end to the situation in sight, the entire area of Northern Japan is bound to become completely uninhabitable for humans and animals. The problem is not only isolated to Japan, since radioactive isotopes are diffusing through planet Earths air and water, and bioaccumulating in the food chain. We have seen the government agencies' maps and regulatory limits being consistently downplayed in order to prevent public panic -- so it might be wise to multiply their numbers accordingly.

The sad part is how their government also LIES to the general public creating an illusion that will end in a very untimely and possibly painful death. No wonder politicians rank less then attorneys. It's a race as to who tells better lies. Politicians won hands down.

    Fukushima Daiichi Documentary

    May 16

    Posted by leakspinner

In 1966, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) started construction of the Daiichi nuclear plant in Fukushima, Japan. This movie explained the mechanism of nuclear electric power generation, and the procedure of construction of the power plant. Many Japanese people visited the movie theatre to watch this movie at that time. This movie was digitised by the support of Saitama Culture Promotion Grant. This movie was kindly provided by Science Film Museum for free http://www.kagakueizo.org/english/

Radiation Poisoning Being Kept Under Wraps In Japan
    05/16/2011

    http://lucaswhitefieldhixson.com/radiation-poisoning-being-kept-under-wraps-japan

I must admit while researching the developments at Fukushima, I am often baffled by the lack of news on the effects of the radiation being released from the 4 compromised reactors. With levels as high as 2,000 mSv outside of Reactor 1, workers would only be able to work in these areas for 30-60 minutes before receiving the max dose of radiation allowed. One of the reasons that we may not be hearing about all of the cases of radiation poisoning, is that the Japanese Government is sending people exposed to high level radiation to select hospitals across the country.

The workers at Fukushima Daiichi have only seen Medical Officers one time since the end of April. The doctor who inspected the workers at the plant in April was quoted stating that the workers were at a risk of depression or death from overwork. There are over 800 workers at Fukushima Daiichi, hundreds of which sleep on-site in a building adjacent to the reactors.

Reported Radiation Exposures / Illnesses / Fatalities

15 people admitted to hospital with symptoms of radiation poisoning on March 13th 2011
2 workers found dead in reactor basement- March
3 workers replacing cable in Reactor 3 worked in waters containing radioactive iodine, caesium, and cobalt at 10,000 times the normal levels - March
17 total workers reported exposed to over 100 mSv of radiation - March
Japanese tourists from Tokyo traveling to China found to have levels of radiation that "seriously exceeded standards". the pair lived in an area 125-200 miles from the plant. - March
Pets and Animals in Eugene Oregon thought to have radiation poisoning from sniffing debris on ocean shoreline washing up from Japan. - March
THE ONLY DOCTOR TO EXAMINE THE WORKERS FROM MARCH - MAY STATED THAT THE WORKERS ARE AT RISK OF DEPRESSION OR DEATH FROM OVERWORK.
2 workers found with INTERNAL and EXTERNAL radiation exposure over 200 mSv - May
Radiation found on Japanese Cars shipped to Chile - May
