Activists in Egypt call for ‘second revolution’

    Cairo, May 27, 2011

"In what is being dubbed as a “second revolution”, Egyptian activists are planning to stage a huge rally on Friday, targeting the military rulers for being slow on implementing the democratic transition process, even as signs of a rift appear in the protest movement. "

Egypt sets Aug. 3 for Mubarak's 'trial of the century
By Hannah Allam | McClatchy Newspapers

CAIRO — Egyptian authorities Wednesday set Aug. 3 as the start of former President Hosni Mubarak's trial on criminal charges — a firm date that will help make real for many in this country his stunning descent from once-untouchable strongman to an infirm octogenarian stripped of power and possessions.

Many here believe the sight of Mubarak shuffling into court also will send tremors through other Arab nations where unelected rulers are battling varying degrees of popular rebellion.

Whether the trial will begin on time is an open question, however.

Egyptian Attorney General Mahmoud Abdel Maguid told Egyptian news outlets this week that Mubarak's health has deteriorated so much that he cannot be transferred to Cairo's notorious Tora prison from a military hospital in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el Sheikh, where he's been undergoing treatment since reportedly suffering a heart attack on April 12. His exact condition has been a mystery since, though Maguid said one of the concerns authorities had was that the Tora prison hospital didn't have a fully equipped intensive care unit.

According to the state-owned MENA news agency, Mubarak, his sons, Gamal and Alaa, and a businessman, Hussein Salem, will face charges that they used their positions to illicitly enrich themselves and others.

Mubarak, 83, also will be tried on charges that he conspired with former Interior Minister Habib el Adly and others in the killings of protesters during the 18 days of demonstrations that ended with Mubarak's ouster, MENA said. At least 846 people were killed and more than 6,400 were wounded.

The announcement of a trial date appeared timed to quell public criticism of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which took over after Mubarak's resignation. Activists complain that the military council has acted slowly and in secrecy to prosecute former regime figures, while ordinary protesters have been sentenced to prison terms after military trials that lasted only an hour.

So far, access to court proceedings against members of the former regime has been severely restricted, which angers Egyptian activists who seek a public reckoning for the regime's long list of alleged human rights violations and misuse of Egypt's funds.

"The investigations are kept secret and the trial as a whole is treated as top secret," said Ahmed Helmi, a lawyer and founding member of a group of legal scholars compiling evidence against the former regime. "We can never see what's happened behind closed doors, we can't see if the process is legally correct or not, witnesses are not allowed in."

Tens of thousands of Egyptians returned Friday to Tahrir Square, the revolutionary nerve center, to reiterate demands, including that the Mubarak family be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

To date, the only major regime conviction is of Adly, the former interior minister, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption. Adly still faces the more serious charge of ordering the killings of protesters as head of the nation's feared police and security apparatus. His next court date is June 26.

Last month, an Egyptian criminal court sentenced a police officer to death for killing 20 protesters and wounding another 15 on Jan. 28, one of the bloodiest days of the revolution. That sentence was handed down in absentia — authorities still haven't tracked down Mohamed Mahmoud Abdelmoneim, the convicted officer.

Egypt’s interim government may shut off gas to Israel

Israel's long-established energy agreement could be about to go up in flames. The original deal for gas supplies from Egypt was set up by President Mubarak, but now a post-revolution Cairo is demanding that the terms be renegotiated.

Israel cannot be choosy in picking its energy resources. It has few of its own and most of its neighbors are not willing to share theirs.

This is why sourcing secure energy is a hot issue in the Middle East.

“Whenever we can get it and wherever we can get it, we should,” says Yozef Paritzky, a former Minister of National Infrastructure and Energy of Israel.

For the last six years, Israelis have been getting a lot of its energy from Egypt. An underwater pipeline pumps natural gas from the Egyptian city of El Arish to the Israeli port of Ashkelon.

But the revolution in Egypt, supported by the United States, is backfiring on Israel. The interim Cairo government saying it is not obliged to sell gas to Israel and is pushing to re-negotiate the agreement.

Adiv Huri, a journalist and analyst who writes for several Egyptian papers from Israel, says the deal was always unpopular among Egyptians.

“The Egyptian people started to know that all this business with the gas is so fake,” he said. “And it’s not giving any benefit to the Egyptian people.”

The Egyptian public prosecutor has since ordered an investigation into the deal. Former President Hosni Mubarak and two of his sons are accused of having personally benefited from it.

This does not surprise Yosef Paritzky, who set up the natural gas system in Israel. He was against the deal from the start, because it was signed between Israel and the East Mediterranean Gas company, which is registered offshore and has no assets in Egypt.

“It was obvious that they achieved it in ways that were accustomed in the Arab world,” says Yozef Paritzky. “And it was also very obvious that one day if the president is not Mubarak, [if he] is not going to rule Egypt, then of course the whole contract is not worth the paper that it’s written on.”

The East Mediterranean Gas company declined the request for an interview.

Live updates: A blow by blow account of Egypt's 'Friday of Determination'

    SNIP

"The Supreme Council for Armed Forces was strongly criticized in today's protests, with people chanting that the army is not the SCAF. Also, the political forces participating in today's protests agreed that the debate of 'the constitution vs. the elections first' should be avoided. When the MB made their statement it was met with a lot of criticism, especially from the Revolution's Youth Coalition. However, the tense situation was quickly contained.

In Suez, Alexandria and a number of other cities the call for the sit-in seems to be gaining momentum as well.

In Qayed Ibrahim Square, Alexandria, tens of thousands are still protesting and the corniche road remains blocked. "

Thousands of Egyptian protesters remain in Cairo's Tahrir Square after two days of clashes in which at least 13 people were killed and hundreds injured.

On Sunday, police and troops made a violent attempt to evict the demonstrators, firing tear gas and beating them with truncheons.

However, the protesters returned less than an hour later, chanting slogans against Egypt's military rulers.

The European Union said it condemned the violence "in the strongest terms".

There were also clashes in other cities including Alexandria, Suez and Aswan.

A total of 11 people were reportedly killed on Sunday and two on Saturday, according to medical sources. Health officials say as many as 900 have been injured, including at least 40 security personnel.

The demonstrators, some wearing gas masks, say they fear Egypt's interim military rulers are trying to retain their grip on power.

The violence comes a week before the country's first parliamentary elections since President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in February.

Egypt refers 19 Americans to court for 'inciting unrest'

Egypt has decided to try 19 Americans and 24 other employees of various nonprofit groups on charges that they illegally used foreign funds to fuel unrest in the country.

Egypt's military rulers had already clamped down on US-funded organizations, which claimed to promote democracy and human rights in the country, and accused them of provoking violence in the aftermath of the popular uprising a year ago that caused former dictator Hosni Mubarak’s downfall.

Egypt's Sunday decision to refer the foreigners to trials before a criminal court came despite warnings from the United States which threatened to cut a USD 1.5 billion annual aid to Egypt.

Millions have taken to the streets across Egypt to demand the resignation of President Morsi on the first anniversary of his inauguration. But Morsi loyalists are staging counter-demonstrations, saying they will defend the leader with all means available.

02:40 GMT: Egypt’s armed forces have issued a response to President Mohamed Morsi’s speech in a post on their official Facebook page. In the statement from the the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), entitled “The Final Hours” in reference to the army’s 48-hour ultimatum set to expire on Wednesday, there was little doubt left that SCAF intended to follow through on their demands.

"We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool," read the statement.

That message was posted only three hours after Morsi entreated the nation to adhere to the “legitimacy” of his government. A military source who spoke to Reuters said the army’s statement made clear that it would not abandon the demands outlined by Chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

The 48-hour ultimatum to Morsi is set to expire at 10:00 am EDT (1500 GMT), at which point the armed forces have stated that they intend to intervene to quell public unrest, and enact their own plan for a transitional government.
