Based on oral tribal tradition my grandpa told that Midgard Serpent and Spöke (the worm) were not identic... I interpreted the mainly as well-meaning and protective seen Midgard Serpent as some kind of ring-continent... The Spöke, that he also sometimes called Leviathan, came from the ocean and attacked the Serpent... Maybe later some protagonists or ideologized interpreters saw both as identic... (I only remind what Christian missionaries did to the god Tornasuk of the Innuit...). Also the Egyptians differed serpent (cp. the "mother snake") and worms...

I think a physio-psychological main question to the "Egyptians" always was where the "axis" that holds the scales is located - and this point could shift I guess.
Maybe these "north-pillar-expeditions", later also of the Romans, had this function, to locate the "world axis".
