Coronavirus Traces Found in Massachusetts Wastewater at Levels Far Higher Than Expected

Researchers screening wastewater in Massachusetts for the novel coronavirus found more traces of the pathogen than expected given the number of confirmed cases in the area.

Wastewater analysis of this kind has previously been used by scientists to track other infectious diseases, as well as substance abuse in a given population. Now, several research groups around the world have started using this method to look for the novel coronavirus in a bid to estimate how many people are infected in a community.

    Summary:

Researchers are working on a new test to detect SARS-CoV-2 in the wastewater of communities infected with the virus. The wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) approach could provide an effective and rapid way to predict the potential spread of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) by picking up on biomarkers in feces and urine from disease carriers that enter the sewer system.
