Women Who Build: Artists Who Own is an ongoing project focused on women coming together to learn construction skills, grow their women-powered network, volunteer, and build a tiny house together in June 2017.
Unlike most tiny house builds, this project involves over 50 women learning not only construction skills but marketing, sourcing, and research. The team of women meet monthly to discuss design of the house and development of this project, then participate in workshops to gain confidence in the skills necessary to build a tiny house. Even though construction is typically considered to be a male’s job, the participants range in age from 14 to over 65.

Perhaps due to the fact that the challenge of designing viable tiny homes pushes architects to come up with creative space-saving solutions, the tiny house movement is bursting with great ideas. The latest such dwelling to come to our attention, dubbed ESCAPE, is a 37 sq m (400 sq ft) home that boasts a handsome design, lots of customizable options (including operating completely off-grid), and legal status as an RV.
ESCAPE is envisioned as a vacation cabin, first home, or rental property, and is pretty well-stocked for small living. The interior contains a main living area, bathroom and separate toilet, bedroom, and a small kitchen area. Each of the rooms can also be customized with a range of options, which include a steam shower, air conditioning, and dishwasher. The porch can also be converted into a semi-outdoor multi-function space.
Owing to its legal status as an RV – or Park Model RV to be precise – ESCAPE is mounted on an RV chassis and wheels, so doesn't need proper foundations, nor is it subject to the same taxes and planning laws as a permanent structure. Just to be clear though, it's not a motorized RV and contains no engine, so you're not going to be driving this thing down the road. It also requires a moving truck to be transported, like a mobile home, and can't simply be towed with a decent-sized car like the OTIS.
There's not a lot of additional space to play with given its size, but judging from the photos, ESCAPE doesn't fall into the familiar trap of resembling an oversized shed. Indeed, the design owes more than a little to Frank Lloyd Wright (who the designers cite as an influence), and the pleasingly rural appearance is achieved thanks to finishing touches like wooden window frames, hardwood floors, cedar wood siding, and large overhangs.
The home is said to be very efficient to heat, and sports a tight (though not totally air-tight) envelope. Though there are no efficiency figures available, the ESCAPE company website states that its sealed combustion gas fireplace is adequate to handle the worst of Wisconsin's winter weather. On the all-important storage front, there's a large closet and built-in armoire, bedroom drawers, and cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom.
ESCAPE is available for purchase now, and comes already built. It will set you back a minimum of US$79,000, depending on options. A company rep informed Gizmag that potential buyers are encouraged to view the house in person – more details via the source link below.

This tiny house is a 377 sq. ft. integrated the studio with split stone cladding that matches the terrace walls. The architects took advantage of the different ground levels by raising the bedroom area up, giving it an unimpeded sea view through the large living area windows. The spacious bathroom is located behind the bedroom. The bathroom door and the interior shower wall were made of translucent glass to let in extra light. The kitchen was designed as an intermediate level between the living area and the bedroom by building it on a raised storage floor. Drawers and storage bins built into the floor provide enough storage to keep the 35 m2 (377 ft2) studio free of clutter. The kitchen cabinets are tucked under the bedroom level with the concrete countertop only being revealed when a section of the bedroom floor is flipped up to act as the backsplash.

Foam Cement or Autoclave Aerated Cement is in my opinion, the BEST building material in the world. In Germany for example, it is used in 60% of all buildings. It is an ultra light masonry product, weighing only 1/5 of the weight of ordinary concrete. It is composed of 1 part water, 1 part cement (which is powdered or ground limestone), 1 part non toxic dish soap. The detergent is foamed using air from a compressor and a pump or motor to agitate the mixture (I use a conventional drill and paint mixer to blend it all together and it works fine). The expansion of trapped materials results in ''air'' or oxygen molecules which comprise the majority of the material (I believe close to 80%) upon expansion. It's fire proof, water proof, insulating, bulletproof (U.S army used the foam for ballistic testing, look it up) and earthquake proof, hurricane and monsoon proof, impervious to insects, rodents provides acoustic insulation and is 100% free of toxic of harmful substances, which makes it 100% biodegradable and completely recyclable. It is all natural and produces no by products. Also, as if it weren't' enough, it won't rot, rust, corrode, warp under cold or heat or otherwise decompose in at least 30 years for my home so far. The future was invented in 1923, but the powerful lumber and steel industries of America have lobbied hard to keep AAC uncertified for U.S. building codes. But there's a bunch of countries in Asia and Europe that have awakened to this super accessible, high quality low cost housing. - h) in the middle of the Aircrete form, e.g. Building blocks, pre-formed house hulls, etc… If using air crete just for insulation in a "regular" stick built house all that would be in the frame already. The wiring running through piping to not get covered in the air crete. I suspect the same could be done here. You could even cut the spaces you need into the walls after they are up and fill the gaps with more air crete. The Biggest problem I see with air crete is that the plumbing would be embedded in it. Making repairs a hassle. I think. This is a big I think. I am guessing I do not know 100%.

Perhaps due to the fact that the challenge of designing viable tiny homes pushes architects to come up with creative space-saving solutions, the tiny house movement is bursting with great ideas. The latest such dwelling to come to our attention, dubbed ESCAPE, is a 37 sq m (400 sq ft) home that boasts a handsome design, lots of customizable options (including operating completely off-grid), and legal status as an RV.
ESCAPE is envisioned as a vacation cabin, first home, or rental property, and is pretty well-stocked for small living. The interior contains a main living area, bathroom and separate toilet, bedroom, and a small kitchen area. Each of the rooms can also be customized with a range of options, which include a steam shower, air conditioning, and dishwasher. The porch can also be converted into a semi-outdoor multi-function space.
Owing to its legal status as an RV – or Park Model RV to be precise – ESCAPE is mounted on an RV chassis and wheels, so doesn't need proper foundations, nor is it subject to the same taxes and planning laws as a permanent structure. Just to be clear though, it's not a motorized RV and contains no engine, so you're not going to be driving this thing down the road. It also requires a moving truck to be transported, like a mobile home, and can't simply be towed with a decent-sized car like the OTIS.
There's not a lot of additional space to play with given its size, but judging from the photos, ESCAPE doesn't fall into the familiar trap of resembling an oversized shed. Indeed, the design owes more than a little to Frank Lloyd Wright (who the designers cite as an influence), and the pleasingly rural appearance is achieved thanks to finishing touches like wooden window frames, hardwood floors, cedar wood siding, and large overhangs.
The home is said to be very efficient to heat, and sports a tight (though not totally air-tight) envelope. Though there are no efficiency figures available, the ESCAPE company website states that its sealed combustion gas fireplace is adequate to handle the worst of Wisconsin's winter weather. On the all-important storage front, there's a large closet and built-in armoire, bedroom drawers, and cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom.
ESCAPE is available for purchase now, and comes already built. It will set you back a minimum of US$79,000, depending on options. A company rep informed Gizmag that potential buyers are encouraged to view the house in person – more details via the source link below.

This tiny house is a 377 sq. ft. integrated the studio with split stone cladding that matches the terrace walls. The architects took advantage of the different ground levels by raising the bedroom area up, giving it an unimpeded sea view through the large living area windows. The spacious bathroom is located behind the bedroom. The bathroom door and the interior shower wall were made of translucent glass to let in extra light. The kitchen was designed as an intermediate level between the living area and the bedroom by building it on a raised storage floor. Drawers and storage bins built into the floor provide enough storage to keep the 35 m2 (377 ft2) studio free of clutter. The kitchen cabinets are tucked under the bedroom level with the concrete countertop only being revealed when a section of the bedroom floor is flipped up to act as the backsplash.

Foam Cement or Autoclave Aerated Cement is in my opinion, the BEST building material in the world. In Germany for example, it is used in 60% of all buildings. It is an ultra light masonry product, weighing only 1/5 of the weight of ordinary concrete. It is composed of 1 part water, 1 part cement (which is powdered or ground limestone), 1 part non toxic dish soap. The detergent is foamed using air from a compressor and a pump or motor to agitate the mixture (I use a conventional drill and paint mixer to blend it all together and it works fine). The expansion of trapped materials results in ''air'' or oxygen molecules which comprise the majority of the material (I believe close to 80%) upon expansion. It's fire proof, water proof, insulating, bulletproof (U.S army used the foam for ballistic testing, look it up) and earthquake proof, hurricane and monsoon proof, impervious to insects, rodents provides acoustic insulation and is 100% free of toxic of harmful substances, which makes it 100% biodegradable and completely recyclable. It is all natural and produces no by products. Also, as if it weren't' enough, it won't rot, rust, corrode, warp under cold or heat or otherwise decompose in at least 30 years for my home so far. The future was invented in 1923, but the powerful lumber and steel industries of America have lobbied hard to keep AAC uncertified for U.S. building codes. But there's a bunch of countries in Asia and Europe that have awakened to this super accessible, high quality low cost housing. - h) in the middle of the Aircrete form, e.g. Building blocks, pre-formed house hulls, etc… If using air crete just for insulation in a "regular" stick built house all that would be in the frame already. The wiring running through piping to not get covered in the air crete. I suspect the same could be done here. You could even cut the spaces you need into the walls after they are up and fill the gaps with more air crete. The Biggest problem I see with air crete is that the plumbing would be embedded in it. Making repairs a hassle. I think. This is a big I think. I am guessing I do not know 100%.

We met up with Catherine and Pascal from Ma Maison Logique (https://www.mamaisonlogique.com/) to see their latest brilliant tiny house design. Our video of their first tiny house (the cutest tiny house ever) is our most popular video and we didn't know how they could possibly top it. But they have!
The Novio is their latest tiny house design measuring 210 square feet. It has clever space saving hidden features, like a composting toilet in a drawer, and a ladder tucked away in the wall, and many extra clever and thoughtful touches, like a skylight in the loft for stargazing, and massive windows in the living room to take in the beautiful Saint Lawrence River view.
The modern minimalist interior design is stunning with white walls and untreated wood storage drawers and closets.
The lego style tiny home is a guest house that has access to electricity year round so they've installed 2 small electric baseboard heaters and high performing insulation. To manage humidity without losing heat, they installed a heat recovery air exchange ventilator (HRV).

The Cowboy Cabin | Tiny Texas Houses

A rustic little cabin sits on a beautiful piece of southeast Texas acreage, looking like it has been there for over a century. While the weathered siding and rusty tin roof are decades old, the cabin as a whole is not. It was placed there only a few years ago after having been built 50 miles away in the workshop of Tiny Texas Houses.
If you’re not familiar with Tiny Texas Houses, they design and build small cabins and cottages almost entirely from salvaged materials. They obtain the material by deconstructing old houses and barns. While things like wiring and water piping are new for safety reasons, the company says that over 95% of the materials are reclaimed.
The Cowboy Cabin is one of their larger builds. At 12′ by 28′, it has a 336 ft2 (31.2 m2) footprint. The kitchen is roughly in the middle of the ground floor, and is open to the living room.
It looks like the living room is a pretty comfortable size and if you were willing to have one less armchair, you could fit in a small dining set. This cabin, however, has a fold-down table attached to the back of the kitchen peninsula. There is also the option of dining on the screened porch attached to the back of the cabin.
The bathroom is behind the kitchen and features a shower lined with repurposed roofing tiles. The vintage sink has old-school separate hot and cold faucets, which look nifty but might not be so pleasant to use. Next to the bathroom is a nook that seems to be serving as a dressing area, with a good-sized closet and a storage cabinet.
The small cabin has a sleeping loft at both ends, with the one over the living room being slightly larger than the one over the bathroom. The two loft ladders were cleverly integrated into the living room and kitchen shelving. The railing for one loft was created from a pair of old doors turned on their sides. This is a fantastic idea and very practical as most exterior doors are around 36″ wide, just the height required for interior railings.
Besides the cabin itself, the property also has a lakeside pavilion ready for outdoor cooking and dining. Several photos of the pavilion are included at the end of the photo gallery.

A rustic little cabin sits on a beautiful piece of southeast Texas acreage, looking like it has been there for over a century. While the weathered siding and rusty tin roof are decades old, the cabin as a whole is not. It was placed there only a few years ago after having been built 50 miles away in the workshop of Tiny Texas Houses.
If you’re not familiar with Tiny Texas Houses, they design and build small cabins and cottages almost entirely from salvaged materials. They obtain the material by deconstructing old houses and barns. While things like wiring and water piping are new for safety reasons, the company says that over 95% of the materials are reclaimed.
The Cowboy Cabin is one of their larger builds. At 12′ by 28′, it has a 336 ft2 (31.2 m2) footprint. The kitchen is roughly in the middle of the ground floor, and is open to the living room.
It looks like the living room is a pretty comfortable size and if you were willing to have one less armchair, you could fit in a small dining set. This cabin, however, has a fold-down table attached to the back of the kitchen peninsula. There is also the option of dining on the screened porch attached to the back of the cabin.
The bathroom is behind the kitchen and features a shower lined with repurposed roofing tiles. The vintage sink has old-school separate hot and cold faucets, which look nifty but might not be so pleasant to use. Next to the bathroom is a nook that seems to be serving as a dressing area, with a good-sized closet and a storage cabinet.
The small cabin has a sleeping loft at both ends, with the one over the living room being slightly larger than the one over the bathroom. The two loft ladders were cleverly integrated into the living room and kitchen shelving. The railing for one loft was created from a pair of old doors turned on their sides. This is a fantastic idea and very practical as most exterior doors are around 36″ wide, just the height required for interior railings.
Besides the cabin itself, the property also has a lakeside pavilion ready for outdoor cooking and dining. Several photos of the pavilion are included at the end of the photo gallery.
