It’s Shenandoah-
Someone told me this story, and I’ll pass it on to you
A High School orchestra was having a concert one evening and the next piece was to be ‘Shenandoah’.

The music teacher turned to the audience and said

- “We’re going to play it three ways. The first way will be 100% perfect, with no mistakes.

They proceeded to play it that way- with no mistakes- but it was somehow devoid of feeling and interpretation.

“Now I’ve asked each orchestra member to make one mistake!”

They played it again, and it was awful, especially when the trumpets, trombones and cymbals came in.

“But it was over 90% correct. Isn’t that what we are asking of these kids?” the music teacher said.

“Now we’ll play Shenandoah with feeling- and I’ve asked them not to worry about making mistakes.



They played it from the heart- after all, it was Shenandoah.

“That’s the way it should be played and heard,” the music teacher said, amidst the applause,
