Wounded Healers: A personal journey from A-Z

Thanks Troy. By now I can write a book on how not to give an enema. The water hose got away from me and was whipping around spraying the ceiling. We were rolling over in laughter on that one. And how not to use the porta potty at night. Turn the light on first before putting the lid up. The seat and lid lifted up together (which I couldn't see) and poor mom fell in the pee bucket.

These moments of humor can be a wonderful bridge to sanity during such times of stress and no rest.

My sister ran a care home for the elderly for many years, and I worked there while working for adult protective services. Both jobs almost required some type of twisted humor in order to cope/heal.

When my mother died, another sister drove in from Utah and picked up our mom's cremains on the way. When I got to the house, she tried to tell me that she had hid the ashes in the garage, so that my dad could be spared the shock/until he was ready.

"Where is she?", I asked.

"On top of the freezer", she replied.

I do not know why that comment came off the way it did, but all three of my sisters and I were in stitches. I could hardly breathe, and could only keep saying, "Mom is on the freezer!", while slapping my leg.

It was something we all needed, and our humor came from our mother, so as inappropriate as it seemed, there was a "life goes on" quality to the whole thing, already. My mother would have been laughing with us.

The time you are spending with your mother is so precious.

I was finishing graduate school/my thesis when my mother was dying, and did not see her for the last few months of her life, until the night before she passed. I know she wanted me to finish school, and I lived in Fort Bragg, took classes in Napa, and worked wherever I could. Even so, there are parts of that experience I would like to do over.

I can feel the heaviness in your heart. May the Peace of the Christ Consciousness fill you up and carry you through this trial by fire.

You are a good person and a good daughter.

This is not our first time at the rodeo, but it still hurts as bad as the first time (in some cases it can be worse, because grief can be cumulative -- i.e. Any time anybody dies from complications related to AIDS, I cry all over again for every one that I knew).

So again, invoking the Christ Consciousness, I wish you a Peace that surpasses all understanding.

Thank you Troy. These past few days have been difficult but today is much better as they finally put her on a morphine pump so that she is out of pain and she is actually getting well enough to come home in a few days for home care - where she can stay until she passes. The worst thing about what happened before bringing her to the hospital was if she passed without my being able to say good-bye. Now we have some more time which is really precious.

I also wanted to share a story of a patient whose father died in another state so they had him cremated and shipped home. The remains were on a shelf in the Post Office for the longest time because the son couldn't bring himself to go the post office and collect dad. We did get a good laugh out of it and dad finally was moved but I do understand the warped sense of humor one develops when dealing with uncomfortable situations.

When mom had two visitors show up in her hospital room on her first day here she told them, "Too bad I'm dead." We all had a laugh out of that one.

I am pleased to announce that I am the proud grandfather of at least one baby toad, per my initial observations.



It has its father's eyes, and its mother's calm demeanor. Sniff. Sob.

Now I just need to keep the newly-discovered snake from getting to them (it shed its skin outside of the kitchen window, whilst burrowing itself a new tunnel -- my bad for leaving the tarps on the ground that were covering the swamp cooler; I provided just the protection it needed while it was molting and vulnerable). :op

I would take pictures, but toads, if around, are too fast during the day, and at night the flash from the camera would scare them too much.

I keep thinking of the children's book, "Watership Down", and I do not want them to think of me as one of those scary creatures with a glowing stick in its mouth. :op

Maybe it is a baby sister? I have seen three of them so far, and their sizes are: Huge, small, and tiny!

Either way, it is a third toad. :)

I will have to learn more about toads, but I know they do not depend on water in the same ways as frogs. But, that is a good point.

They could be supernatural toads.

The Difference in Frogs and Toads

The big question is what is the difference between frogs and toads? The problem with this question is that there isn’t an easy answer because toads ARE frogs, or at least they are in the frog family. But toads aren’t what are called “true frogs”. True frogs are the species of frogs that most people think of as frogs and not toads. True toads are what people think of as toads and not frogs. There are several differences in true North American frogs and true North American toads.

Frogs have smooth, wet skin that looks slimy. Toads have drier, rough skin that looks really bumpy, like warts. This is where the myth comes from that you will get warts when you touch a toad, but that just isn’t true. Toads do have a weird smell and yucky taste to their skin, though. This is to keep bigger animals from wanting to eat them.

Frogs have skinnier bodies than toads to. Toads are kind of wide and look fat. Frogs also have longer legs and webbed hind feet, but toads don’t need long jumping legs because they walk, and they don’t need webbed back feet for swimming because they live on land. Frogs live in water and jump everywhere they go.

Toads do lay their eggs in water, though, because their babies start off as tadpoles, just like frog babies do. The difference is that frog eggs are laid in bunches, or clusters, and they have a jelly-like substance around them. Toads lay their eggs in lines, or strands, on leaves of plants that live in the water.

In some parts of the world, especially tropical parts near the equator, frogs and toads look very much alike. The only way to tell these frogs and toads apart is to look at their teeth and bones because they will be different, but good luck catching them so that you can get a close look.

If you really want to be able to tell the difference in frogs and toads, ask your parents to take you to the local zoo and go to the amphibian house. There will be frogs and toads from around the world there. Don’t look at the names of the creatures; try to figure out for yourself which ones are which now that you know the difference in frogs and toads.

He was on FB the other day, and sends me messages from time to time. His musical is up and running, but he has been flying back east to see his father (I am not sure if he is still alive), while making preparations for the arrival of his mother. I guess I should give him a call.
