A flavour of his work:
As a young man he shunned university and went to be a forester in a remote land owned by a German barron. The Barron was facing bankrupcy and couldnt afford to build a log plume to carry off his valuable timber. VS said he could build a small one that would be cheap and effective. Hydrologists laughed at him. The Barrons wife knew VS from many hunting trips and she believed him, and persuaded the barron to go for it. Long story short, the barron agrred, they did build it, put in a set of vanes to create a spiral in the water, dropped in a big felled tree and... and hey presto... it didnt work ! lol
the hydrologists had a good laugh and VS was at a loss....
so he sat down on a mound.... the mound had a snake it it! which, startled, jumped into the river and swam off.... VS watched the snake swim away and realised it wasnt swimming in a spiral form BUT a double spiral form (what vision the man had to even see that eh?).. anyway, he quickly ordered his men to insert a second set of vanes, created a double helical current of water, and it worked!
the hydrologists were astounded and angry and nasty about the whole thing.. but this got VS name around and he was whisked off to work alongside max plank et al, and the rest is histroty as it were..
