From time to time I have the odd musical obsession and tapping guitar is one of them. I first heard this style of playing by Ralph Towner in "Weather Report" many years ago. Then found Michael Hedges, an angel incarnate some would say. Now there are many playing in this style. To break in the unfamiliar, here is Antoine Dufour with Tommy Gauthier, a violinist, and what better way to fiddle while babylon burns?
"Spiritual Groove" a high energy piece:

That's great stuff. I've discovered tapping guitar 2 years ago with Erik Mongrain:
    <object style="height: 344px; width: 425px"><param name="movie" value="https://www.youtube.com/v/AbndgwfG22k"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="https://www.youtube.com/v/AbndgwfG22k" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></object>
I went to his show in Montreal and after the show browsed his website. He had a forum where he started a thread about Endgame by Alex Jones. I had watched Loose Change a month before but I thought the conspiracy was limited to 911 so I didn't dig deeper. Endgame really woke me up and I went down the rabbit hole. That's how I ended up on PC. It's because of Mongrain!

wow, interesting his album equilibrium is great. And you know the funny thing is there are a whole bunch of tappers all around each other in Canada , It's in the water !
Never knew about the Alex Jones connection. I am often dismayed more musicians aren't interested in whats going down out there.

    Andy McKee is indeed incredible.

Michael Hedges....what can you say. I got Breakfast in The Field when I was probably 16 or 17 and it blew me away. I grew up as a rock&roll kid playing guitar...but he redefined what I thought was possible on an acoustic. He was a one man orchestra.

YES!!!!! I am a huge fan of tapped guitar solos...

Erm I clicked on your link and I see you guys are talking about a different sort of tapping

Well I play lead guitar and this is more what I had in mind-
    See after 1:40 mark in this Van Halen solo;

    <object style="height: 344px; width: 425px"><param name="movie" value="https://www.youtube.com/v/A2I0a7EwWa8"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="https://www.youtube.com/v/A2I0a7EwWa8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></object>

Can I still be included in this tapping orgy of guitar fans and musicians even though I'm a little strange? please?

Michael Hedges is an amazing guitar player. Used to be on that Wyndham Hill label in the eighties with some other good musicians.
Might dig my old tapes out later.

The earliest instance of tapping on moving picture that I could find is performed by Chet Atkins.

    Is there an earlier one?

lol The guy on harp and the bongos is a riot....he's having way too much fun.

My grandfather took me to see Chet Atkins back in the mid 90s....good times.

That video looks like mid to late 70s so it's hard to say...there's a lot of controversy about who invented tapping. I do remember reading an article about Eddie Van Halen saying that he was doing it in the early 70s in clubs and would play with his back to the audience so they couldn't see what he was doing.

Don't worry Luminari...strange is good. I'm a huge Steve Vai fan...he was my hero in highschool.

and back to tappers, Thomas Leeb, really percussive guy, not the best recording of this but you get the picture
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqSDFa8a7xQ

preston reed is kind of similar,
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=356ViUx1Ktc
getting sick of it yet? I like them all in different ways, but I am perhaps a little like Kula on the cakes on this genre.

Oh wait, can't leave out Don Ross, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MooE3RQgY4

I notice the you tubes of these guys seem like they are rushing the music a little more than other recordings, no matter , but I have really enjoyed tuning in to lost fm . com and all you do is pick one of these guys and press their channel and you get a really great mix of similar music you might never get exposed to . Prolly everyone knows this but as a self confessed computard, I never knew, Heck, I don't even have an Ipod..... yet.
