SOLAR STORMS ARE DRIVING FARMERS CRAZY: Planting season is a hectic time for farmers. For many, it means working through the night using GPS-guided tractors to plant thousands of acres in a short period of time. The season was in full swing on May 10, 2024, when the biggest solar storm in decades struck Earth.

"Our tractors acted like they were demon possessed," says Elaine Ramstad, a Spaceweather.com reader and aurora chaser who helps out on a family farm in Northern Minnesota. "All my cousins called me during the May 10th storm to tell me that 'my auroras' were driving them crazy while they were planting."

Modern farmers rely heavily on GPS. Guided by satellites, smart tractors can work around the clock, seeding perfectly straight rows with precise amounts of seed and fertilizer. When harvesting time comes, the tractors can return to exactly the same spots to pick the crops.

This kind of precision agriculture has become widespread. "I would guess 80% or more of all farmers in the Midwest use at least basic GPS for something--whether it's auto-steer or yield mapping," says Ethan Smidt, a service manager for John Deere. "At least 50% of all farmers are VERY reliant on GPS and use it on every machine all year long."

Solar activity poses a growing problem for farm-tech. During big solar storms, a layer of Earth's atmosphere called "the ionosphere" fills with bubbles, waves, and turbulence, which severely distort radio signals from GPS satellites. Sometimes tractors and harvesters can't lock on, which stops them in their tracks. Or the signal may be garbled, causing them to juke back and forth.

May 10th wasn't the end of it. Tractors went off-course again during the autumnal storms of Oct. 6th and 10th.

Ramstad was helping her cousins defoliate sugar beets on Oct. 6th when her tractor started acting up: "As the aurora activity began, my GPS was off by close to a foot. Twice while on Autosteer, the tractor danced a row to the left, to the right — and then the defoliator was off a row, so I had to loop around and start over. By nightfall, there was no controlling the Autosteer."

Indiana farmer Michael Spencer had a similar experience: "This fall was the first time I was able to see the aurora. My hair was standing on end from the beauty, however, it did make the John Deere tech dance. When the storms were strongest around Oct. 7th, my tractor's Autosteer system would 'jump the line'--meaning, the tractor would make a quick jolt left or right and I would have to manually reset."

A beet defoliator--an example of massive hardware thrown off course by solar activity.

It doesn't take an historic solar storm to cause problems. While the May 10th storm was a rare and extreme category G5, storms in October were much more common category G3 and G4 events. All of them sent massive pieces of hardware off course.

NASA says that Solar Maximum has arrived, and it could last for another 1 to 2 years, confusing tractors again in 2025 and 2026.

Multiple Large 6.0 Earthquakes Along the Aleutian Trench. Larger Quake likely. Sunday Night 12/8

An earthquake swarm has been occurring southwest of Adak Islands, Alaska, since December 8, 2024, beginning with M6.3 at a depth of 18 km (11 miles). The swarm includes multiple significant earthquakes, including two M6.3 events, an M6.1, and numerous aftershocks up to M5.8.

The swarm is located about 100 km (62 miles) SSW of Adak, Alaska, U.S., and 1 540 km (957 miles) ESE Klyuchi, Kamchatka, Russia.

The initial M6.3 quake was followed by 7 aftershocks with magnitudes from 3.8 to 5.8 and another M6.3 at 00:15 UTC in the same location. Several moderately strong aftershocks followed over the next 20 minutes before M6.1 at 00:38 UTC.

Moderately strong aftershocks are still being registered, with the latest being M5.1 at 05:56 UTC.

“This is not a typical mainshock-aftershock sequence; it is a swarm—a cluster of several earthquakes of about the same magnitude,” said Elisabeth Nadin of the Alaska Earthquake Center at the University of Alaska.

“Although today’s swarm includes several significant earthquakes, the chances that they are forerunners of something larger is statistically quite low,” said Michael West, Alaska Earthquake Center director and state seismologist.

“Swarms of moderately large earthquakes are common in the Aleutians and do not necessarily portend anything more substantial,” West said. “However, because this area has been in, or on the edge, of numerous large historical earthquakes, we are keeping close watch on it.”

The recent swarm of large earthquakes occurring at the subduction interface between the Pacific and North American plates is considered a fairly typical seismic event for this region. These earthquakes are taking place along the Aleutian subduction zone, where the Pacific plate is descending beneath the North American plate.

Seismological analysis of the larger earthquakes in the swarm reveals that all were caused by thrust motion along the subduction zone. This type of fault motion is characteristic of the convergent boundary dynamics between the two tectonic plates.

Earthquake swarms of this nature in the Aleutian subduction zone are relatively common, occurring on average every few years.

A similar swarm was recorded in May 2024, approximately 550 km (350 miles) to the east of the current events.

These swarms can result from uneven strain accumulation along specific sections of the subduction interface, leading to multiple smaller earthquakes rather than a single, large rupture. Typically, strain in subduction zones is released through a single major earthquake followed by numerous aftershocks.

Ramstad was helping her cousins defoliate sugar beets on Oct. 6th when her tractor started acting up: "As the aurora activity began, my GPS was off by close to a foot. Twice while on Autosteer, the tractor danced a row to the left, to the right — and then the defoliator was off a row, so I had to loop around and start over. By nightfall, there was no controlling the Autosteer."

Indiana farmer Michael Spencer had a similar experience: "This fall was the first time I was able to see the aurora. My hair was standing on end from the beauty, however, it did make the John Deere tech dance. When the storms were strongest around Oct. 7th, my tractor's Autosteer system would 'jump the line'--meaning, the tractor would make a quick jolt left or right and I would have to manually reset."

It doesn't take an historic solar storm to cause problems. While the May 10th storm was a rare and extreme category G5, storms in October were much more common category G3 and G4 events. All of them sent massive pieces of hardware off course.

NASA says that Solar Maximum has arrived, and it could last for another 1 to 2 years, confusing tractors again in 2025 and 2026.

Multiple Large 6.0 Earthquakes Along the Aleutian Trench. Larger Quake likely. Sunday Night 12/8

An earthquake swarm has been occurring southwest of Adak Islands, Alaska, since December 8, 2024, beginning with M6.3 at a depth of 18 km (11 miles). The swarm includes multiple significant earthquakes, including two M6.3 events, an M6.1, and numerous aftershocks up to M5.8.

The swarm is located about 100 km (62 miles) SSW of Adak, Alaska, U.S., and 1 540 km (957 miles) ESE Klyuchi, Kamchatka, Russia.

The initial M6.3 quake was followed by 7 aftershocks with magnitudes from 3.8 to 5.8 and another M6.3 at 00:15 UTC in the same location. Several moderately strong aftershocks followed over the next 20 minutes before M6.1 at 00:38 UTC.

Moderately strong aftershocks are still being registered, with the latest being M5.1 at 05:56 UTC.

“This is not a typical mainshock-aftershock sequence; it is a swarm—a cluster of several earthquakes of about the same magnitude,” said Elisabeth Nadin of the Alaska Earthquake Center at the University of Alaska.

“Although today’s swarm includes several significant earthquakes, the chances that they are forerunners of something larger is statistically quite low,” said Michael West, Alaska Earthquake Center director and state seismologist.

“Swarms of moderately large earthquakes are common in the Aleutians and do not necessarily portend anything more substantial,” West said. “However, because this area has been in, or on the edge, of numerous large historical earthquakes, we are keeping close watch on it.”

The recent swarm of large earthquakes occurring at the subduction interface between the Pacific and North American plates is considered a fairly typical seismic event for this region. These earthquakes are taking place along the Aleutian subduction zone, where the Pacific plate is descending beneath the North American plate.

Seismological analysis of the larger earthquakes in the swarm reveals that all were caused by thrust motion along the subduction zone. This type of fault motion is characteristic of the convergent boundary dynamics between the two tectonic plates.

Earthquake swarms of this nature in the Aleutian subduction zone are relatively common, occurring on average every few years.

A similar swarm was recorded in May 2024, approximately 550 km (350 miles) to the east of the current events.

These swarms can result from uneven strain accumulation along specific sections of the subduction interface, leading to multiple smaller earthquakes rather than a single, large rupture. Typically, strain in subduction zones is released through a single major earthquake followed by numerous aftershocks.

Temperatures across the Northeast are expected to reach 4 – 10 °C (40 – 50 °F), melting significant snow accumulations from last week’s lake-effect snowstorm. Rainfall totals are forecasted to reach 75 – 125 mm (3 – 5 inches) in some areas, including the I-95 corridor.

The Northeast is at risk of severe flooding this week heavy rainfall combines with warming temperatures to accelerate snowmelt.

Temperatures are expected to rise by 6 – 8 °C (10 – 15 °F) above average on Monday, December 9. In Chicago, highs are forecast to reach around 10 °C (50 °F), while the New York Metro area will see temperatures near 13 °C (55 °F). Across the Northeast, temperatures will climb to 4 – 10 °C (40 – 50 °F), though northern New England is likely to remain cooler.

The season’s first major lake-effect snowstorm, which left some areas with snow accumulations of up to 30 cm (1 foot), increases the likelihood of localized flooding as the snow melts, while heavy rains expected this week could worsen the situation.

Rainfall in some areas, including the I-95 corridor from New York City through Providence, Rhode Island, and Boston, is forecast to reach several inches. Rain is set to begin on Monday, with heavier downpours later in the week.

Contributing to the flood risk is a low-pressure system moving along the U.S.-Canada border in the Midwest, which will merge with a moisture plume drawn from the Gulf of Mexico. This moisture was pulled northward as a high-pressure system shifted off Florida after delivering arctic chills to much of the South and East.

Rainfall on Monday morning will primarily affect areas west of the I-95 corridor, with heavier rainfall expected later in the afternoon and evening. A second wave of rain is forecast to develop midweek, bringing heavy precipitation to the Northeast. On Wednesday, December 11, the Weather Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 flood risk for parts of Connecticut and Maine.

Flood risk will extend into the Southeast, including Atlanta, Georgia, and Montgomery, Alabama, with the heaviest rainfall totals expected to reach 50 – 127 mm (2 – 5 inches) along a stalling front on Tuesday, December 10. Rainfall totals of 75 – 125 mm (3 – 5 inches) with localized amounts of up to 125 mm (5 inches) are possible.

Colder air is expected to move into the region on Wednesday, fueling the cold front driving the rain. This could lead to the possibility of snow by Wednesday night, though it is too early for specific forecasts.

"My favorite clouds appeared this morning," says Nilsen. "It's the earliest in December I have seen them here in Northern Norway. Fantastic sight!"

Polar stratospheric clouds are a sign of extreme cold. Normally, the stratosphere has no clouds at all. PSCs form when the temperature drops to a staggeringly-low -85 C. Then, and only then, can widely-spaced water molecules in the stratosphere coalesce into tiny ice crystals. When sunlight hits these crystals, they blossom with intense iridescent color.

Sky watchers in Sweden are seeing them, too. Aurora tour guide Oliver Wright was leading a group for Lights over Lapland when the clouds appeared over Abisko:

"It looked like the deer was farting rainbows," said an onlooker. Fact check: That's not how PSCs are formed.

There are actually two types of PSCs. The ones we're seeing now are harmless Type II clouds, made of pure clean water ice crystals. Type I PSCs are not so harmless. Containing both water-ice and nitric acid, they are associated with the destruction of ozone and can even presage the opening of an ozone hole. The two are easy to distinguish: Type II PSCs are very colorful, while Type I clouds tend to be wan and pale.

In most winters, the Arctic stratosphere is not cold enough for Type II PSCs until January. Seeing them in mid-December is unusual, and could herald a busy season to come.

STRONG SOLAR FLARE AND CME: Big sunspot 3932 erupted on Dec. 23rd, producing an M8.9-class solar flare, only percentage points from category X. NOAA's GOES-16 satellite recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash: Solar wind speed: 611.9 km/sec

The flare produced a brief shortwave radio blackout over Africa and the South Atlantic Ocean. Ham radio operators in the area may have noticed loss of signal below 20 MHz between 1112 UTC and 1127 UTC.

Of greater interest is the coronal mass ejection (CME). SOHO coronagraphs recorded a fast CME emerging from the blast site. With what's going on with current and upcoming weather storms, along with increase of quakes in some areas, tornados in other areas, along with potential solar flares, it may be time to double check your supplies. Especially ways to keep warm in affected power-grid blackouts areas, have back-up heat and light sources, hand-warmers, food and water, games to entertain oneself or maybe that new The Humanure Handbook, XXXX in a Nutshell Paperback to read that you got in your Christmas stocking. Don't forget the new wool socks, fleece blankets and scented candles. Ramen, eggs, cocoa, coffee, tea.. or bake a few batches of oat bran raisin nut muffins to keep on hand in the freezer, just in case. Might want to have a large clear container with snap lid to keep refrigerated food cold outside if power goes out. Back up propane and wood is always good and plastic liner bags for a lug-a-loo for anyone living in an apartment, or where the water shuts off if the power goes out. Kitty litter works.

Sakurajima volcano Japan, south Japan, Central Pacific Kilauea, Hawaii, West Pacific covered with volcanoes and seismic activity: 7.0, 6.9, 6.8 struck north of Japan (12/27/24), sixes down in the Philippines so that's all been going on in the West Pacific, it's been lighting up with seismic activity.

Equidistant spaced across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, or at least three quarters of it, 5.8, 6.0 earthquake out there on the Mid-Atlantic and then other fives down to the south.. equal spread all across the Atlantic and on the opposite side. Big Time Movement 7.0 and so forth. We're just watching.

Looking for a 5.0 quake in the Mojave Desert. Large boom in central southern Illinois 12/26/24. May be the result of oil and gas wells. Also big time plate movement. First 7 was out in the ocean off California coast. Since then it's been all fives. Down into Nevada 5.7 to 5.8. Six struck almost two weeks ago. 6.9 over in Europe, over in the mid-East coming out of Asia a couple of days ago. And the wave did two things.. went out to the Mid-Atlantic also reflected into itself partially and where it reflected into itself the halfway points between the previous earthquakes were sought out - previous earthquakes were in red or pink and the widest earthquake that struck today its an equidistance spacing of the same size earthquakes 4.9 to 5 and a 5 and that's equidistantly spaced across 3 different plate boundaries bordering the Indo Australian plate. 4.9 to 5 striking across the whole region in one day - that means a wave equal to 4.9 to 5 has spread across the whole region, in a day and it's going to be going over to the West. Think of these like 3 fives. Five, five, five and a five even though two of them were 4.9. If we take them all and add them together, three fives it equals 5.3. If you add four fives together it equals 5.4. Five fives equals 5.5 and so forth on and up.

All the way up to 9.0 and down to 1.0. 5.3 predicted for Turkey. Central America down into South America you take these fives, add them together and 5.1, 5.1 and abunch of fours add toghther 5.1+5.1= 5.2 and we add in a series of fours and we get 5.3. It's the exact same size as what's on the other side. Looks like Cuba is going to be hit again.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Moderate (G2) to strong (G3) geomagnetic storms are possible on Dec. 31st when a CME is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. This is actually a double X-flare. Both explosions pictured above crossed the X1 threshold. Extreme ultraviolet radiation from the flares ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout approximately centered on Australia. Ham radio operators in the area may have lost signal below 20 MHz for as much as an hour around 0430 UTC

Update: Today's X-flares did produce a CME, but it was faint and not Earth-directed. No geomagnetic storms will result from this activity.

Two CMEs to impact Earth, G3 – Strong Geomagnetic Storm Watch in effect for December 31
At least two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are heading toward Earth, with Earth-directed event impacts expected on December 31 and January 1, 2025. The first CME — much stronger, was produced by a filament eruption associated with an M2.0 flare at 04:30 UTC on December 29 from Active Region (AR) 3939. This resulted in an asymmetric, partial-halo CME first seen in NASA coronagraph imagery at approximately 06:24 UTC.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (STRONG): A fusillade of solar activity on Dec. 29-30 hurled two CMEs toward Earth. Their arrival on Dec. 31-Jan 1 could spark moderate (G2) to strong (G3) geomagnetic storms. If a strong storm materializes, Northern Lights could descend to mid-latitudes in the USA and Europe, competing with fireworks displays to start the New Year.

THE SUN IS FLARING: The sun is crackling with solar flares. In the last 48 hours alone it has produced an X-flare, a double X-flare (pictured below), and more than a dozen M-class solar flares:

Repeated pulses of extreme ultraviolet radiation have ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, creating a series of shortwave radio blackouts rolling around all longitudes of our planet. Global ham radio transmissions below 20 MHz have not been very reliable for the last two days.

More flares are in the offing. There are currently five sunspots on the solar disk with mixed-polarity magnetic fields capable of producing M-to-X-class solar flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of additional X-flares on Dec. 31st.

Axial Seamount, an underwater volcano off the coast of the northwestern Oregon/California US is likely to blow sometime in 2025, in weeks. Experts made the prediction on December 10 after detecting seafloor swelling around Axial that mimicked a level seen immediately before an eruption in 2015. Seismic activity has also increased, with hundreds of earthquakes generated around the volcano per day and earthquake swarms greater than 500 per day.

The Sun keeps Changing up and getting ready to Release the Big One!

At least two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are heading toward Earth, with impacts expected on December 31 and January 1, 2025. The first CME — much stronger, was produced by a filament eruption associated with an M2.0 flare at 04:30 UTC on December 29 from Active Region (AR) 3939. This resulted in an asymmetric, partial-halo CME first seen in NASA coronagraph imagery at approximately 06:24 UTC.

Additionally, AR 3939 produced an M3.3 flare at 17:08 UTC that resulted in yet another partial-halo CME, although a more faint, first seen in NASA coronagraph imagery around 18:00 UTC. The second impact is expected at around 06:00 UTC on January 1, 2025.

As a result, a G3 – Strong Geomagnetic Storm Watch is in effect for December 31. However, this Watch does not take into account the second, weaker, CME impact so we might see periods of even stronger geomagnetic storming.

During G3 – Strong geomagnetic storms, voltage corrections may be necessary to maintain stability in power systems, and some protection devices may trigger false alarms. For spacecraft operations, the storm can cause surface charging on satellite components, increased drag on low-Earth-orbit satellites, and potential orientation issues requiring corrective measures.

Other systems can also experience disruptions, such as intermittent satellite navigation and low-frequency radio navigation problems, as well as irregularities in high-frequency (HF) radio communication.

Additionally, auroras associated with G3 storms have been observed at latitudes as low as Illinois and Oregon (around 50° geomagnetic latitude).

G3 storms occur approximately 200 times per solar cycle (11 years), or about 130 days per cycle.

Before the end of the UTC day, our star produced a total of 21 M-class flares, leading up to two more X-class flares on December 30.

There are currently 11 active sunspot regions on the Earth side of the Sun. Four of them have ‘Beta-Gamma’ magnetic configuration and one has ‘Beta-Gamma-Delta’ — all are capable of producing strong to major eruptions on the Sun.

Solar activity is expected to continue at moderate to high levels over the next three days, with a 75 – 80% chance for M-class solar flares and 25 – 30% for X-class as the conglomeration of regions approaches the Sun’s western limb.

CME IMPACT SPARKS AURORAS: As predicted, a CME struck Earth's magnetic field on Dec. 31st (1621 UTC). The strike sparked G1-class geomagnetic storms and auroras well outside the Arctic Circle. Petr Horálek sends this picture from Oravska Lesna, Slovakia:

What odds!" says Horálek. "This year's New Year celebration occurred on a moonless night with a clear sky. Just minutes after the fireworks started, an aurora appeared in the sky. What a great start to the year!"

As often happens with CME strikes, the initial impact did not cause a significant geomagnetic storm. In fact, during the waning hours of Dec. 31st, it looked like a dud. The situation changed as Earth moved deeper into the CME's wake. Magnetic fields from the sun, brought to Earth by the CME, linked to our planet's magnetic field and pried it open. Solar wind poured through the gap to power a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm.
