The Merovingian kings were noted sorcerors in the manner of the Samaritan Magi,

and they firmly believed in the hidden powers of the honeycomb.



Because a honeycomb is naturally made up of hexagonal prisms,

it was considered by philosophers to be the manifestation of divine harmony in nature.

Its construction was associated with insight and wisdom

To the Merovingians, the bee was a most hallowed creature.

A sacred emblem of Egytian royalty, it became a symbol of Wisdom.

Some 300 small golden bees were founded stitched to the cloak of Childeric I (son of Meroveus)

when his grave was unearthed in 1653.

Napoleon had these attached to his own coronation robe in 1804.

He claimed this right by virtue of his descent from James de Rohan-Stuardo,

the natural son (legitimized in 1667) of Charles II Stuart of Britain by Marguerite, Duchesse de Rohan.

The Stuarts in turn were entitled to this distinction because they, and their related Counts of Brittany,

were descended from Clodion’s brother Fredemundus

– thus (akin to the Merovingians) they were equally in descent from the Fisher Kings through Faramund.

The Merovingian bee was adopted by the exiled Stuarts in Europe,

and engraved bees are still to be seen on some Jacobite glassware.

A team of Czech archaeologists excavating at the site of Abusir, 17 miles (27 kilometers) south of Cairo,

has discovered the large limestone tomb of a top royal physician from about 2400 B.C.

The physician's name was Shepseskaf-Ankh, which means "Shepseskaf is living"

—a tribute to the last king of the fourth dynasty during the period known as the Old Kingdom.

As the Head of the Physicians of Upper and Lower Egypt, Shepseskaf-Ankh served the royal household during the fifth dynasty.

He is especially associated with a king named Niuserre, who ruled Egypt for at least a decade.

Miroslav Bárta, director of the archaeological team from the Czech Institute of Egyptology,

is particularly pleased with the historical details contained in the tomb as well as its architectural preservation.

"This microcosmos illustrates general trends that ruled the society of the day," he says.

Niuserre "followed the policy of marrying some of his daughters to his top officials to keep their ambitions at bay," says Bárta.

"This is exactly the moment when the empire starts to break down due to rising expenses and increasing independence of powerful families."

It was also a time when Egypt's kings had run out of room at the royal funerary complex on the Giza plateau,

the site of the grand pyramids of the fourth dynasty. They were now building smaller, rougher pyramids farther south.

Shepseskaf-Ankh's tomb is the third physician's tomb to be found in the area. Other court officials

and high-level priests were also laid to rest there, close to the rulers they once served.

Shepseskaf-Ankh came from an elite Egyptian family. In one section of the tomb—surrounding a feature called a false door

—he is identified by titles indicating his elevated status, such as Priest of Re in the Temples of the Sun, Priest of Khnum, and Priest of Magic.

The spacious dimensions of his tomb—roughly 46 feet (14 meters) by 70 feet (21 meters), and 13 feet (4 meters) high

—are another indication of his importance. The funerary complex features an open court and eight burial chambers for Shepseskaf-Ankh and his family.

Being a royal doctor, it seems, could ensure your family's success not just in this world but in the afterlife as well.

Abusir is part of the great royal cemetery that stretches between Giza and Saqqara in the desert west of the Nile.

Although looting has increased there in the wake of the 2011 revolution, this discovery shows that some areas remain undisturbed by the recent turmoil.

The Czech team next plans to excavate structures beneath the tomb to see what additional secrets they may reveal.

- the 11 arms are the knights of the round table but they are all closely related,

there were many other arms represented at that time already, this one shows 26 arms:

Pendragon or Pen Draig (pronounced Thriag), meaning in Welsh "head dragon" or "chief dragon"

(a figurative title referring to status as a leader), is the name of several traditional Kings of the Britons:
◦Ambrosius Aurelianus, son of Constantine II of Britain, called "Pendragon" in the Vulgate Cycle
◦Uther, brother of Aurelius and father of King Arthur, is called Uther Pendragon

In the Historia Regum Britanniae, one of the earliest texts of the Arthurian legend,

only Uther is given the surname "Pendragon", which is explained as meaning "dragon's head".

In the prose version of Robert de Boron's Merlin, the name of Uther's elder brother Ambrosius is given as "Pendragon",

while Uter (Uther) changes his name after his brother's death to "Uterpendragon".

The use of "Pendragon" to refer to Arthur, rather than to Uther or his brother, is of much more recent vintage.

In literature, one of its earliest uses to refer to Arthur is in Alfred Tennyson's poem Lancelot and Elaine, where,

however, it appears as a title of Arthur rather than as a surname, following contemporary speculation that "pendragon"

had been a term for an ancient British war-chief.

The term "Pen Dragon" also is a Fennian (Ephraimite) form meaning, Pen "child(ren) of" Ap "Son of"

combined with "Dargon" or "Dragon" the symbol of the Tuatha de Dannon (Danites)

who were warriors that married the Irish widows, hence the Gaullo term Welch (Ue Lach) or "woman of a warrior."

Dark Age Warrior to Mythical Archetype

Merlin the magical shape-changer never contrived a more striking transformation

than the change time has wrought on Arthur - that rough and ready Celtic commander,

enthroned forever now as the doomed king of a medieval never-never land, clinging to shining ideals in a gathering dark.



For a few brief years perhaps, he held back the pagan invaders whilst the Celtic church in Wales

was busy sending forth missionaries to found churches and monasteries in dark-age Europe.

Alas! their gentle brand of Celtic Christianity, which had grown so naturally out of paganism,

was not to last. Behind the Saxons rolled the Church of Rome and Celtic Christianity was shouldered out.

Their missionary saints soon became a distant memory. Even so, Arthur and his band of warriors were not forgotten.

Something about their bearing was remembered by the invaders after they were overwhelmed.

They took them to their hearts, romanticised their image and adopted Arthur as their own.

He became the prototype for generations of Englishmen. Their ideal suffused and empire.

The legends that gathered around him filled a treasure house with poetry, music and artistic inspiration.

Even today he continues to inspire; for the King who gave rise to so many stories has become almost divine;

a fragment of the old gods dressed up in medieval finery.

Rome had come like the ‘Sorcerer's Apprentice’ and chopped up the old broom,

but the broom sprang to life again; an army of smaller figures with an aura of magic around them.

For Arthur and his many-faceted warrior knights reflect timeless aspects we feel in ourselves.

Their problems strike responsive chords in all of us; chords that echo far beneat
